Character Study
We have been focusing on characters in fiction books. Everybody has a favorite storybook character. Sometimes we love the way the character looks or acts and sometimes the character reminds us of someone we know or even ourselves. This past week, we have read some books about popular characters. We will continue reading some books with strong characters next week as well. All of this will lead to an exciting end of year activity on Monday, June 5th. We will dress up as our favorite character and have a scavenger hunt with clues that revolve around the characters we have been reading about. When picking a character to dress up as, please keep your focus on characters from books (not TV shows or movies). There is no need to buy a costume!!! We have discussed how you can find things you already have at home to dress like the characters. For example, in the book David Goes to School by David Shannon, the character wears red pants and a blue and white striped shirt. Another example could be Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse, just wear red boots, a crown, and a purple purse. Even If You Give a Mouse a Cookie; a headband with mouse ears (out of paper?), overalls, holding a cookie. We will keep brainstorming here at school, please help your child think of their favorite book character. It does not need to be a book we read here at school. I will send a letter home in the Friday Folder as a reminder!
Measurement
In math, we have been comparing objects based on their length or height. We compared which objects are longer, taller, or shorter. We also worked with our partner to measure objects around the classroom using cubes. We begin measuring in kindergarten with nonstandard units of measurement to build the concept of measuring without the additional challenge of reading a ruler. Students gain an understanding of where to place the units of measurement, to make sure that each unit is the same size, that they should be lined up straight, and that they shouldn't have space between each unit. We are getting creative when measuring objects. Students decided to measure my hands, feet, and ponytail!
Brookfield Zoo
Thank you so much to all the wonderful chaperones! We could not have done it without you! The trip was a great success!!!
