Cougar Weekly Update
May 24, 2019
Principal's Message
There is something special about Memorial Day weekend. It is always a time to remember those who fought valiently and gave the utlimate sacrifice to ensure our freedom. It is also the unofficial start of summer. As we go in to the final weeks of the school year I want to encourage everyone to keep reading each evening and maintain a regular schedule so that students are ready for learning up until the last day of school.
Have a great weekend!

Nursing Notes
Dear Parent/Guardian,
As the end of the school year approaches, I will be cleaning and reorganizing the clinic for next year. Please pick up your child’s medication before, or during, the last day of school. Most medications, and particularly inhalers, expire after one year. These medications could be of value to your child over the summer months, as well as deflect additional medical expenses for your family.
Please remember that medications cannot be sent home with students.
It is the policy of Manassas Park City Schools that Medication Authorization Forms are valid for one school year only. Any unused medications and medical supplies not picked up will be discarded after the school year ends.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
I have enjoyed taking care of your children and I wish all a safe and healthy summer.
Sincerely,
Deborah Braun, LPN
School Nurse

Crayola Colorcycling Program
In honor of Earth Day coming up, our school is teaming up with Crayola for their ColorCycling program to encourage reducing, reusing, and recycling to help keep our planet clean! We are asking them to collect old Crayola markers and bring them to school in order to send to Crayola to be recycled into new markers.
Cougar Elementary will be participating in Uncle Slam’s Reading Program this year.
First Base- Uncle Slam, the Potomac Nationals mascot, will come to visit us on Friday, May 31st at dismissal to encourage all of our students to keep on reading.
Second Base- Bookmarks will be distributed for each student to have one. Students will read four books and write them down on the back of the bookmark with a teacher’s or parent’s signature on the bottom to confirm that the books have been read.
Third Base- Cougar’s designated “Reading Game Day” is Sunday June 9th at 1:00. Encourage your students to attend the game that day WITH THEIR BOOKMARK to exchange it for 2 free tickets! The theme of the game is “Caped Crusaders,” meaning the students can wear a Superhero cape if they would like to. Students will be invited on the field before the start of the game to participate in a parade around the field honoring their commitment to reading! (If students can’t make the June 9th game, they can attend any of the other three themed games.) See attached.
Home Plate-Have fun and enjoy the game!
