Phonics Focus
Our phonics focus for October is short vowel sounds and patterns, beginning consonant blends, and closed syllables. Your child should be able to say and hear all of the short vowel sounds in words. Please play the short vowel video with your child. Ask him or her to say the short vowel sounds in isolation OR say a short vowel word and see if he or she can tell you the short vowel sound they hear! The students have learned that short vowel sounds are found 'closed' in by consonants. Words such as bed, cap, pit, chop, and shut all have short vowel sounds.

Guided Reading
In September, we read fiction stories (make believe) and encouraged students to ask questions while they were reading to deepen their comprehension (understanding) of what they read. Students also discussed the characters, setting, problem, and solution to help organize information.
In October, the focus has switched to non-fiction or informational books. Students are discussing the text features found in informational text that help them better understand and learn what they are reading about. Text features include pictures, charts, captions, labels, and/or bold words. Students will continue to ask and answer questions to show an understanding of what they have read.
Readers look for the vowel clue when reading unknown words!
Nightly Reading
Research shows that strong readers read daily - please help instill this habit in your child! On Monday night we send home the plastic nightly reading folder along with a book at your child's reading level. Please be sure to provide a quiet place for your child to read each night and initial the log once they have read. The plastic folder should be returned each Friday. We will change the books and send home again on Monday! Thank you for helping to develop this practice and responsibility for returning the log, we are proud of the children who have done a super job with nightly reading!
RAZ Kids
Speaking of nightly reading......your child is fortunate to have RAZ kids available to him/her for home use. RAZ kids is an interactive online reading program that provides books at your child's current reading level. We are thrilled to see that many students have already logged on and are using it. If you need help accessing RAZ kids please email me at mespo@chariho.k12.ri.us
