Hello from the principal's desk!
Jan 11, 2018
What a crazy start to the year! Please know that from our entire staff, we are deeply sorry to have canceled school these last few days. I know how hard it must have been for many of you to scramble last minute to find child care. I know some of you had to bring your kids to work or school for big presentations, or miss work altogether. That was an awful way to start the school year... please also know that it took a lot of late nights, early mornings and diligent effort from the AUSD MOF (Maintenance, Operations and Facilities) to get the lights back on. They spared no expense to make sure that we had heat, lights, phones, and power to all the classrooms. We are confident we got the root problem figured out, and solved so we won't have this trouble anymore.
It was a joy to see all the kids back today! I loved listening to their screams of delight as they ran up and saw their friends at the start of school, all the hard work and focused attention I observed during class time, and watching the competitive but still fun games of athleticism at recess. We had a great day.
Tomorrow is PJ day! The first Friday of every month is a spirit day... let's see who has the most spirit! Please make sure your students wear comfortable shoes though, no slippers or flip flops.
We have a really REALLY busy January and start of February. Please see the calendar of events below and pick a couple of events to attend (Heritage Night, Title 1 parent night, Ruby's Got Talent). Your participation really matters in your child's education. One event in particular is our WONDER book club talk. We are doing this on the night of Thursday, Jan 18 from 6:00 - 7:00 in the Media Lab. Students, parents, aunts and uncles and RBE staff are all invited. We may get the Sarah Burkey, the Librarian from the Children's section of the Alameda Free LIbrary to attend also! Please let us know you are coming by RSVP'ing here - https://goo.gl/forms/e4klenWRlnb3x8R33. We might bring in some pizzas to eat too... let's talk!
One other event coming up is the Ruby Bridge's school presentation at the Board meeting at Alameda City Hall on Jan 23 at 6:30. These are GREAT times to come out and show our school spirit and pride. Please come, dressed in Ruby gear and watch our presentation. Show the board how much we love our school and say thank you to them for all of their support! This is also a great chance to teach your children about civic engagement. I would love to fill the room with Ruby families and students.
Did you hear about the choral performance at our whole school assembly before break? Mrs. Rockwell has been working with a group of 4th and 5th graders in her choir, and they performed beautifully! Check our twitter feed for videos of the performance!
Thanks for all of the love that poured in before the Holiday. Kids brought sweet notes and gifts for all us here at the school. It is a great time to work in schools, and made me grateful for all the positive relationships we have at our school. So thank you all!
With gratitude,
Jesse Woodward

Student Council Corner
This week, our Student Council Officers and Class Representatives are distributing small collection boxes to every student. These boxes can should go home as we hope students, family member, friends, etc. will contribute their spare change to help find a cure for blood cancers such as leukemia and lymphoma. Ruby Bridges has participated in this fundraiser for the past three years now and is particularly important and meaningful to our school community because two of our very own students have been affected by blood cancer. Both students are winning their fight against it!
Collections will continue until the end of January. When boxes are full, students should bring their change to school and add it to their large classroom collection box! Let’s see which grade level raises the most money! This is a Student Council sponsored initiative. Any questions, please contact Mrs. Furuichi Fong!
