Hudson Hawk Band Updates

Week of 11/14/2022

All-Region Auditions Success!

This past Saturday, 50 of our Wind Symphony students auditioned for the Region 3 TMEA All-Region Bands! They competed against over 1200 band students from schools in Garland, Mesquite, Rockwall, Forney, Sunnyvale, and Royse City. We are proud to say we had 19 students earn a spot in one of the bands (2nd most of all the GISD schools) and many more who were super close to earning a chair. We are very proud of all of our students who auditioned; for showing courage, determination, and growth throughout the process. They represented themselves and our school very well!

Students & Section of the Week

This week we are recognizing the Wind Symphony Bass Clarinet section - they both made the GISD All-District Band and were 1st and 2nd chair - the best bass clarinets in GISD!

We are also recognizing Jay Griffin (beginner tuba) and Alan Nguyen (Beginner Band clarinet). Jay has such a positive attitude and is always working hard in class. He is always prepared and is improving daily. Alan is very generous and helpful to the other students in his class. He is a wonderful student who is always wanting to learn and grow more - we love him!

Angel Adoption

Every year, the Hudson Band "adopts" Angels from the GISD Salvation Army Angel Tree. It has become one of our favorite band traditions - seeing our students be generous and excited to provide a happy holiday season for others. I am working on getting the information about our "adopted" angels this week. We will be asking for monetary donations this week in all band classes. No amount is too small and right now, we can only accept monetary donations and not actual items since we don't know anything about our angels yet.

We will be randomly selecting 12 students (7th and 8th graders) to help with the Angel Tree shopping. Shopping will be done on Wednesday, November 23 from 9-10:30am at the Sachse Walmart off of Woodbridge Pkwy. Students must have a ride to and from Walmart to be considered for the shopping trip. Students who wish to be selected to shop for the angels must fill out this form by Wednesday, November 16th at 4:00pm.

Ornament Donations

This Friday we will be decorating the band hall for the holiday season. Another tradition we have is decorating a Christmas tree with ornaments that have been donated by students over the years. If your student would like to personalize an ornament to donate to the band, they can begin bringing those in anytime. We love to reminisce about former students as we decorate the tree each year!

Upcoming Events

Booster Club Meeting

Wednesday, Nov. 16th, 7pm

4405 Hudson Drive

Sachse, TX

Please join us for our next booster club meeting. Enter through door #11 in the back of the building.

Advanced Band Supplies

Please make sure your student in the Wind Symphony, Honors Band, or Symphonic Band have their required supplies for this year. We are using the Foundations for Superior Performance book in all band classes and many students do not yet have the book. We are also beginning to work on tuning and if your student does not still have their tuner/metronome from beginner band, they will need one ASAP.

Next Band Fee Payment Due

If you are splitting the fee over 6 months, the next payment is due November 18. Please make sure to stay on top of these payments so we can continue providing the necessary items and experiences for your student.

Fall 50 Day Practice Challenge

All students should have received the Fall 50 Day Practice Challenge paper in class the day before Fall Break. If students practice for 50 out of the 63 days on the paper (beginning Sunday, October 9), they will be invited to the Pajama Elf Movie Dodgeball Extravaganza Party on December 14. Parents need to initial each box on the days the student practices and a practice session must be at least 20 minutes long.

Wind Symphony and Honors Band Fall Festival Trip

We have not filled up the chaperone list for the Wind Symphony & Honors Band trip in December. If you would like to volunteer to chaperone the trip, please fill out this form. There are only 12 chaperone spots available - first come, first served.

Please remember that if you did not pay the full $30 trip fee with the contract, the remainder is due after Thanksgiving Break on Monday, November 28.

WS & HB Boys Uniform Info

Due to supply chain and cost issues, we are having a very hard time getting our boys tuxedo shirts for their concert/contest uniforms this year. We have made the decision to forgo the tuxedo shirt and instead have the boys wear a solid white, button down, full collar dress shirt under their vests for concert/contests. Please make sure your Honors Band or Wind Symphony boy has this shirt by our holiday concert on December 13th.

Wednesday, December 7 - Beginner Band after school rehearsal to prepare for holiday concerts. 4:15-5:45pm.

Monday, December 12 - Beginner Band Holiday Concert at SHS auditorium. Students will stay after school, walk to the high school together, warm up, and perform. Concert begins at 6:00pm. Students will wear their band t-shirt and jeans/dark pants. They can wear festive accessories as well.

Tuesday, December 13 - Advanced Bands Holiday Concert at SHS auditorium. Students will arrive at SHS at 5:15pm for warm-up. Concert begins at 6:00pm. Wind Symphony and Honors Band students will wear their contest uniforms (black dresses for girls and tux pants, shirts, vests, and ties for boys). Symphonic Band students will wear dress clothes for this concert.

Repeat Information

Switching to BAND app over Remind

Because our band has grown so big, we can no longer use Remind. We have reached the maximum participants in multiple classes and do not have space for more unless we upgrade our account (which costs more than we wish to spend). We will be switching messaging services to the BAND app (which the Sachse HS band also uses) to align our cluster. Please sign up for the appropriate class(es) for your student. We will NO LONGER be using Remind, so if you were just signed up for band, you will not need that app/number any longer. Thanks for understanding!

Band Fees

Because our school band budget is so small, we have to charge a band fee so that we can provide the best music education experience for all our band students. This band fee covers all instructional materials (band binder and all its contents), band shirt, contest entry fees, solo accompanist fees, performance music, music theory subscription, transportation, meals before performances, incentive days, and so much more. We set up our band fees to be collected up front (or split into payments), so that we are not constantly asking for $5 here, $7 there, etc.

This year, you can pay band fees through cash or check (made out to Hudson Band Boosters), Paypal through Charms (watch this video to walk you through the Charms system), and for the first time - credit card through the band website. Visit the band website and enter the password HawkBD2223 to enter the secure page and pay online. Please consider adding the optional donation to your cart to cover the credit card fees we incur using this convenient service.

If you have a financial hardship, please communicate with us so we can help you. We never want a student to be unable to participate due to finances and will do everything we can to work with your family and ensure your student is included.

Private Lessons Filling Up

Our private teachers are THE BEST and their schedules are starting to fill up. If you are going to sign up for private lessons, DON'T WAIT - TURN IN THE ENROLLMENT FORM ASAP.

The single biggest investment you can make in your student's musical advancement is signing them up for private lessons. Return the private lesson enrollment form to get your student started ASAP. Lessons are $20 each week and the fee is paid directly to the instructor.

Log in to Charms

Please take a moment this week to log in to Charms.
