Headlines and Happenings for Sunflower Elementary

WELCOME BACK

On Friday, August 14 all of the Sunflower staff were introduced to the student body. Students cheered as the teacher groups competed in a game of Teacher Hungry Hippo. The Third Grade teachers ended victorious! Students were introduced to Kelsey James the new Music Teacher, Malinda Chappell the new Interrelated Teacher, and two new Para Educators, Chandra Eidson and KateLynn Morin.

NEW SECURED ENTRANCE AND FRONT OFFICE

The Sunflower office staff and Mrs. Kinaman our school nurse moved into the newly completed office space on Friday August 14th. The new office provides for a much needed and more secured entrance to the building. If you come in during the day, you will have to enter through the side door to your left, right as you enter through the first set of entry doors.

MAP TESTING

Students began taking the MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) assessment this week. MAP is now web-based which allows teachers and administrators faster access to the data which will be used to place students in their MTSS groups. A good night’s sleep and a healthy breakfast will help students do better on these tests and year-around! This is an excellent time to practice healthy breakfast habits and maybe even try a new breakfast recipe or two! Children who eat breakfast are better prepared to learn and play! If you don't have time for breakfast at home . . . send something with your child to eat while waiting for the bus or in the car. You can prepare a ‘breakfast to go’ the night before, or encourage your child to eat breakfast at school as part of the School Breakfast Program. Any nutritious food you enjoy is good for breakfast.

GRANDPARENTS DAY - September 11th

We will have two sessions at each building. You are invited to attend one or both of the sessions in a building or split your time between the two buildings. We will have activities and our Scholastic Book Fair at each of the buildings. Grandparents may park at each building, but due to limited parking at each of our schools, a shuttle service will be provided free of charge from the Paola Middle School parking lot. Grandparents will be picked up and dropped off at each of the buildings. A shuttle will also run between the buildings at 1:30 and to the parking lot at the end of the day. The bus will be close to the ticket booth by the fence.

WATCHDOG KICKOFF

On August 26th we had our WatchDog Kickoff. Many thanks to all the Dad's who came out for the presentation and pizza, and signed up to volunteer for a day or two at our school. The kids really enjoy our "Dog Dad's". A special thank you to Chris Capettini for bringing us back to the basics and explaining to everyone what the true meaning behind the Watch Dog Program is really about.
