Selby Star
Weekly Update - Oct. 31, 2019
Dear Selby Families,
How quickly another month has come to an end. I must say that each day I realize what a special place Selby is. It is special because of the people inside of it. I am very grateful for the opportunity to be the Principal here.
We have had several children with head lice - please check your child(ren) regularly and treat as required. Even if you have treated, please keep checking.
Hot lunch plans changed quickly this week so my apologies for our last minute 'old school' letter sent home for cash/cheque to come back to the school. We will return to the online system for December.
This week we had an October door decorating contest for all class rooms and spaces - the entries were amazing! The newly formed spirit club did the judging. See some of the pictures below. We were also blown away with some amazing pumpkin carvings! Awesome job, Selby Stars!
Stay tuned for fundraising information coming home next week. This is being organized by our parent council. There are 2 great options: poinsettias for the holidays and homemade soaps and sprays for your home. Information will be sent out through school day.
Thank you for your cooperation in not parking in the bus lane nor near the dumpster. I also really appreciate parents/guardians waiting in the foyer at the end of the day to pick up your children. This greatly reduces the number of interruptions in classrooms.
Thank you for your support of our Kingston Frontenac fundraiser, we can't wait to see our amazing choir sing our anthem and make us proud. We sold over 150 tickets so we will be well represented! Looking forward to seeing many of you there tomorrow night!
Have an amazing Friday and weekend!
K. Witley

Indigenous Education Month
In November, we celebrate Indigenous Education Month in the LDSB. This month provides an opportunity to study Indigenous perspectives, stories and contemporary realities across the curricula. In classrooms across the board, we focus on treaties, as well as the achievements and accomplishments of Indigenous peoples’ in Canada.
Over the course of the month, students, staff and community members will be recognizing a number of important days to deepen knowledge and learn together about our shared history and build stronger relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in Canada.
We will soon begin clubs in our Maker Space (STEAM Studio). These were very much enjoyed by students last year! We would really appreciate community volunteers sharing their expertise with students! If YOU or someone you know (Grandparent, neighbour, community member) would like to come in ONCE A WEEK for an hour for ONE MONTH please let Donna or Ms. Witley know, and someone will get in touch with you! You will need a CPIC. We would love to have your help!!
Some ideas for our clubs, but are not limited to:
Cooking/Baking club
Stained Glass club
Coding and Robotics club
3D Printing Club
Photography Club
Carpentry club
Science Experiments club
Arts - sculpting, drawing, painting club
Music Making, Guitar club
Sewing club
Dates and clubs will depend on the offers of help we receive. Thank you so much!
