SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING (SEL)
How Helping Others Can Relieve Anxiety and Depression
A recent study examined two ways of trying to increase one's sense of self-worth when experiencing depression and/or anxiety by using self-image goals or compassionate goals.
Those who used compassionate goals (helping others and avoiding selfish behaviors) had a greater increase in self-esteem and self-worth. This resulted in a significant decrease of depression and anxiety.
The scale that measured compassion in the study above includes seven techniques:
- Being supportive of others.
- Having compassion for others' mistakes.
- Making a positive difference in someone's life.
- Making constructive comments to others.
- Avoiding doing anything that would be harmful to others.
- Avoiding being self-centered.
- Avoiding doing things that are unhelpful to others.
