Happy New Year & Welcome Back!
January 8, 2018 to January 19, 2018
Help support the new AMMS Virtual Reality Lab by donating USED iPhones!
Imagine exploring the Eiffel Tower right from your very own desk in French class or experience walking on the moon in your science class. Virtual Reality allows students to explore far off places without ever leaving the classroom.
AMMS Instructional Technology is working to build a Virtual Reality Lab to provide these experiences for all Autrey Mill students. Through your donations, you will be providing our students at AMMS with cutting edge opportunities and preparing our students for the jobs of tomorrow.
The request for Apple iPhone(s) will allow us to build the virtual lab and overcome compatibility restraints. Requesting USED iPhone 6, 6Plus, 6s, 6s Plus, 7, or 7Plus. Apple iOS devices are able to seamlessly work with our system at Autrey MIll. Selecting iPhones offers an optimal experience for students to hone in on the virtual experience through the use of goggles that cannot be accomplished with iPads or laptop devices.
Check out the following website for more information!
Donations may be turned in to the school front office or to Mrs. Andrea Tseng-Rioux in the media center.

Class Updates
Social Studies
Welcome Back! We are all so excited to start a new semester after such a successful first semester! This semester, we are starting with Latin American Geography – this is a short unit that will finish with a test on Wednesday, January 24th.
This first week back, we will be creating maps of Latin American countries and physical features, learning more about the geography of these places, and reviewing map skills (absolute location and map scale). There will be a quiz over map skills in class on Friday, January 12th.
The second week of the unit will be primarily devoted to learning about the environmental issues in Latin America – Air pollution, oil pollution, and deforestation. All information that will be on the test will be covered in class the first two weeks (provided the weather cooperates), the final days of the unit will be spent reviewing the material to help students prepare for the test.
ELA
Welcome back! We are continuing with the second half of our informational text unit. During this time, we will focus on nonfiction text features (RI5), nonfiction text structures (RI5), sentence structure – including simple and compound sentences, and finally, author’s perspective and purpose when relating to informational text (RI6). We will continue work with the informational writing standard (W2), focusing on topics such as research, body and conclusion paragraph development, the use of appropriate transitions, etc. Individual teachers will send more information regarding quiz and test dates for this unit. Students will continue to read their current novels or nonfiction choice texts during this unit.”
French:
Bonjour parents,
Please refer to Madame Blackburn’s emails and Google Classroom for the most up-to-date information.
Mathematics:
6O:
We are beginning Unit 4, One-Step Equations and Inequalities. We are working on writing expressions from word problems, (6.EE.6) and checking solutions to equations and deciding which solution makes the equation true (6.EE.5). We will be learning how to solve one-step equations with addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division (6.EE.7). When solving, it is very important that students draw a straight line down from the equal sign to separate both sides of the equation and show the inverse operation on both sides of the equation. The approximate quiz date for these standards is Wednesday 1/24.
6A:
We will be starting our next unit, Ratios and Proportional Relationships. We will begin by reviewing proportions, ratios, rates, and unit rates (7.RP.1, 7.RP.2). Next we will work on direct variation using tables, graphs, equations, and diagrams, as well as verbal descriptions (7.RP.2a, 7.RP.2b, 7.RP.2c, 7.RP.2d). We will then begin to study how to use proportional relationships to solve tax and percent problems (7.RP.3). The approximate quiz date for these standards is Friday 1/26.
70 / 7A:

Science:
Science is beginning our Weather vs. Climate unit. We will be looking at measuring weather and factors that influence climate with a focus on ocean currents. Students will have a minor assessment mini project about ocean currents beginning after the 3-day weekend.
On Friday, January 19th, students will take a quiz over weather, climate, and ocean currents. The textbook chapters covered for this quiz are chapter 14 sections 1 & 2, chapter 16 section 1, and chapter 17 section 1.
