Greetings, Komensky Families!

I'd like to thank all of the families who came out last Wednesday evening to hear the presentation by Dr. Zitlali Morales on the benefits of being bilingual. There are many myths that surround bilingualism and Dr. Morales shared with us what has emerged from research. What we learned was:

• All students have the capacity to learn 2 languages.
• Students who develop their native language then learn English obtain higher grades than those who sacrifice their native language.
• It takes 5 to 7 years to develop academic language, which speaks to why standardized test score are often low among second language learners.
• Students who are educated in more than 1 language have access to more jobs than those who only have 1 language, leading to an economic advantage.

The Komensky staff, along with D100, is excited to be embarking on a dual language journey. The district's dual language program will begin this fall at Emerson, followed by Komensky in August 2016. Be on the look out for more information over the course of the next year as we make preparations for a successful program.

We have a number of family events on the horizon and need parent volunteers! Our Parent Involvement Committee is looking for volunteers to assist with a Friendship Dance as well as our Annual Block Party. Please contact Ms. Lopez at mlopez@bsd100.org if you are interested in helping.

Saludos Familias de Komensky,

Me gustaría dar las gracias a todas las familias que vinieron el pasado miércoles por la noche para escuchar la presentación por el Dr. Zitlali Morales sobre los beneficios de ser bilingüe. Hay muchos mitos que rodean el bilingüismo y el Dr. Morales compartió con nosotros lo que ha surgido de la investigación . Lo que aprendimos fue:

• Todos los estudiantes tienen la capacidad de aprender 2 idiomas.
• Los estudiantes que desarrollan su lengua materna y luego aprender Inglés obtienen calificaciones más altas que aquellos que sacrifican su lengua materna.

• Tarda 5 a 7 años para desarrollar el lenguaje académico por eso es que los estudiantes que hablan dos lenguajes (ingles es el 2ndo lenguaje) a veces salen mas bajos en los exámenes estándares.

• Los estudiantes que se educan en más de 1 idioma tienen acceso a más empleos que los que sólo tienen 1 idioma, dando lugar a una ventaja económica.

El personal Komensky, junto con D100, está emocionado de embarcarse en un viaje de dos idiomas. Programa bilingüe del distrito comenzará este otoño en Emerson, seguido por Komensky en agosto del 2016. Este atento para obtener más información sobre el curso del próximo año mientras nos preparamos para esta programa exitoso.

In an effort to keep our students safe, our lunch lines moving smoothly, and to prevent students from arriving to class late due to their lunch arriving late, ALL Lunches must be delivered no later than 11:15 AM. If your child's lunch is not here by that time they will be provided with a school lunch. Students will not be allowed to leave the line and parents will ONLY be allowed in the lunch room on FRIDAYS ,with the exception of parents of DLP students. We thank you in advance for your cooperation with this.

En un esfuerzo por proteger a nuestros estudiantes , Por mover nuestras líneas de almuerzo con fluidez sin problemas , y para evitar que los estudiantes llegan tarde a clase debido a que su almuerzo llego tarde , TODOS los almuerzos deben ser entregados NO MAS TARDE de 11:15 AM . Si el almuerzo de su hijo no está aquí por ese tiempo se les proporcionará un almuerzo escolar . Los estudiantes no se les permitirá salir de la línea y los padres SOLO se permitirá en la sala de almuerzo los VIERNES, a excepción de los padres de los estudiantes DLP. Le damos las gracias de antemano por su cooperación con esto .
