Cheri Hudson
Media Coordinator!
About Me!
I have worked for Catawba County Schools for nineteen years. I started my career as a teacher assistant/bus driver at Startown Elementary. During my six years at Startown, I assisted in 2-6th grades, the EC self-contained classroom, and in PE. While working as an assistant, I attended Lenoir Rhyne University. After receiving my Bachelor's degree from LRU, I taught at Blackburn Elementary. During the six years I was at Blackburn, I taught Kindergarten through 3rd grade. While working at Blackburn, I received my Master's Degree in Library Science from ASU. My first Media Coordinator position was at Catawba Intermediate School. During the two years there, I received my National Board Certification. I am currently the Media Coordinator at Catawba Elementary School. I opened this library seven years ago. I have put my heart and soul into our media program and I strive daily to make it a welcoming place for all my patrons. My hope is to instill a love of reading in my students and to share my passion for learning with them as well!
I can't talk about me without sharing a little information about my family! I am married to Mark and we have three children-Emma, Colin, and Owen. Emma will be in 7th grade, Colin will be in 5th grade, and Owen starts Kindergarten in the fall! They are my pride and joy and remind me daily that I am truly blessed! My family along with my faith keeps me going!
Some Examples of How I Impact Student Achievement...
- I collaborate with staff to plan and implement lessons.
- I currently teach 1st, 3rd, and 5th grade reading groups of "high flyers". We read various texts, have discussions, and then create a final product to close out the unit!
- I implemented Reading Buddies with Bandys High School students (The students visited once/week to mentor, read, and assist our students with assignments.)
- I work with a crew of 5th & 6th grade students to produce a daily morning news show.
- I update the scrolling news show daily. This show highlights school happenings and student achievements.
- I pull requested materials for staff and reccommend useful sites or other materials to use in their lessons.
- I assist with Benchmarking and proctor for EOG testing.
- I present new technologies and helpful sites at staff meetings.
- I showcase newly purchased materials at staff meetings and actively seek recommendations of needed materials from staff and students.
- I promote reading and our media program through monthly contests, displays, and library activities.
- I received a Target Reading Grant to purchase books for our Media Center.
- I collect, sort, and send in Box Tops. (I used these funds this year to purchase Nook Books, online subscriptions (PebbleGo & BrainPop Jr.), supplemental materials, and Non-Fiction sets of books.)
- I coordinated a movie/pizza fundraiser for our Media Center. We raised over $600 to purchase novel sets and eBooks.
- I partner with the public library and ASU summer reading programs.

This is why I do what I do….
"The man who does not read has no advantage over the man who cannot read."
“The only thing that you absolutely have to know, is the location of the library.”
"Libraries allow children to ask questions about the world and find the answers. And the wonderful thing is that once a child learns to use a library, the doors to learning are always open."
— Laura Bush
