Internet Safety
An important part of the Warwick library curriculum includes teaching students about Internet safety. Lessons include what to do if you are cyberbullied, what information you should not share online, what to do if you are uncomfortable or scared by something you see online.
5 Internet Safety Tips for Kids
Clicky and NetSmartzKids
First grade have been learning lessons on Internet Safety with the help of Clicky from NetSmartzKids. Great site to pair video with books like Arthur's Computer Disaster by Marc Brown to teach young children to turn to a trusted adult for help with their computer problems.
Point of View
Second grade students have been looking at stories from different character's view points with the help of titles like Bears Should Share, one of the Another Point of View series by Alvin Granowsky. This title tied easily to Internet Safety by pointing out all the personal information we should never share online, as shared by CommonSense Media.org.
Three Little Pigs in Cyberspace
Third grade took part in learning from Internet Safety games created by MediaSmarts.ca. The three little pigs learn how to keep their personal information private when online so they are not bombarded with online advertising.
NBC and iSafe
With the help of NBC and iSafe.org, 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students have been learning the difference between appropriate and inappropriate, cyberbullying, digital footprints, cyber security and private information. Lessons filled with discussion time and sharing allow students to overcome fears and receive much needed guidance for their daily screen time.
Coloring Craze
Students enthusiastically embraced this month's MakerSpace. They loved the opportunity to create their own designs and have me copy them for their friends to color. Many budding artists in the making.
How to Keep Your Kids Safe
There are many great resources online to help you talk to your kids about staying safe online. I have gathered many on my Internet Safety page for the students and here is another of my websites with more Internet Safety for parents and teachers.
