A Message from Mrs. Van Slyke
Dear Families,
Happy New Year! I hope that your holiday season was filled with joy and happiness. We are excited to welcome children back to the building for the second half of the 2023-2024 school year. Our focus will continue to be on providing quality literacy instruction to our students.
In June 2022, Governor Dunleavy signed the Alaska Reads Act into Law. The focus of this law is on the Science of Reading with the goal that all students read proficiently by the end of 3rd Grade.
Please watch the video below to learn more about the Reads Act. The law instituted some changes that may impact your child.

Attendance Matters
Did you know...?
- Starting in kindergarten, too many absences can cause children to fall behind in school.
- Missing 2 days a month can make it harder for kids to learn to read.
- Students can still fall behind if they miss just 1 or 2 days every few weeks.
- By 6th grade, absenteeism is one of three signs that a student might drop out of high school.

National Assessment of Educational Progress Testing
K-Beach Elementary's fourth graders will participate in the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) on February 7th. NAEP is the largest nationally representative and continuing assessment of what students know and can do in various subjects. NAEP is administered by the National Center for Education Statistics, within the U.S. Department of Education. NAEP is different from our state assessments because it is a common measure of achievement across the country. The results are released as The Nationโs Report Card, which provides information about student achievement to educators, parents/guardians, policymakers, and the public.
