General Information
Park Glen Community,
Have you heard your child's teacher encouraging your child to read and read some more? There is ample research to back up these requests. In one study by Mason, Stahl, Au, and Herman the authors "estimated that if a student read sixty minutes per day, five days a week, the child would learn approximately 2,250 new words per year, which is far more than the number of words that can be taught through direct instruction." The benefits of daily reading are profound and long-lasting as well. As a richer vocabulary translates into a student's deeper understanding of texts and a heightened ability to use language, the student is more confident in communicating ideas, wishes, and needs.
Other reading research indicates the following childhood milestones:
- 16-18 months - an infant is able to say, on average, 50 words and understands approximately 350 words - mainly nouns and verbs
- 25-36 Months - a child is beginning to understand early prepositions (e.g., on, under, or across) and spatial relationships (e.g., “put them together” or “stand next to her”)
5-18 years67,23 - a child learns 1,000 – 5,000 words each year and 400 new words are acquired through explicit instruction each year
You all have been great in supporting our teachers and staff in keeping the safety and education of our students the main thing, the main thing. Reading is just one of the ways the campus and community can work hand in hand.
Wishing you all good health and much happiness,
Marci Formby
