What's Happening This Week
- Meet and Greet, 9:00 a.m. or 9:30 a.m.
Due to restrictions for large groups and because parents are not currently able to come on-site, this year's Meet and Greet is for kindergartners, students new to GLC, and students who were enrolled at GLC but have never attended in-person. We want to be sure all our students new to the campus get a chance to tour the school, find their classroom, and meet their teacher. Kindergartners will meet at the Kinder gate on N. Quail Dr. and students in grades 1-8 will meet at the main gate by the cafeteria on W. Robin Dr. There will be two tour options available, one starting at 9:00 a.m. and one starting at 9:30 a.m. All tours will be organized by grade level. We'll have shade canopies for families waiting outside while their child tours the campus.
Thursday, August 12
- First Day of School, 8:15 a.m.
We are thrilled to welcome students back to school! All students should be on campus by 8:15 a.m. For students eating breakfast on-site, service begins at 7:30 a.m. For students who are not eating school breakfast, we recommend arriving after 8:00 a.m. when our playgrounds open. Our kindergarten gate on N. Quail Dr. will open daily at 8:05 a.m. Pick-up is at 2:15 p.m. for grades K-3 and at 3:10 p.m. for grades 4-8.
What to Bring
Chromebooks and iPads
Students who attended a VUSD school last year should bring their fully charged Chromebook or iPad to school the first day. This year, students will take their devices back and forth each school day. For students who are new to VUSD and our school, we will check out a device to them the first week.
Masks
All students and staff are required to wear masks indoors. Please send your child with a clean mask to school each day. Masks are not required when outdoors. Families may find that using a neck strap helps their child hold on to his/her mask.
Water Bottle
Due to health guidelines, shared water fountains are currently unavailable. Please send your child with a water bottle each day. This is especially important during these hot Summer and Fall days.
Marking Items
Each year our school develops a good-sized Lost and Found area. To assist us in returning misplaced items, we encourage families to write their child's name on jacket/sweater tags, notebooks, pencil cases, reusable/washable masks, and more.
Message from our School Site Council (SSC) President
Attention Parents,
GLC needs your help! The VUSD School Board will be voting this Tuesday as to whether or not our teachers should be allowed to continue using Newsela. From what we understand the vote will be very close. If you have a few minutes to email members of our School Board, it could make all the difference.
Newsela is a resource that’s used primarily for social studies and science. It’s a subscription website that allows our teachers to curate articles for their class on the various subjects they’re studying. The students then have access to those articles chosen by the teacher. The biggest benefit to Newsela is that teachers can use the same article for a wide variety of reading levels. The site allows teachers to customize reading levels for their students.
This is a program that has been part of our adopted curriculum from the inception of our charter. We aren’t asking the Board to make a change, simply to confirm the status quo. This resource is strongly supported by the teachers and administration and has been approved by the School Site Council. As a Charter school, some of our curriculum is different from that of neighborhood schools, and the Board needs to understand that our parents support these vital tools.
If you would like to email the board to share your support, it’s best to do so by Monday (8/9). You can find a list of board members and email addresses by clicking HERE.
Thank you for your help and support,

Lo que está pasando esta semana
Martes 10 de agosto
- Reúbrase y salude, 9:00 a.m. o 9:30 a.m.
