HVHS Newsletter

Week 7, Term 1 - Friday 10 March

Principal's Welcome

Kia ora koutou,

It has been a busy couple of weeks - The Year 12 Physical Education (PE) classes were fortunate to have beautiful weather for their three days and two nights camp. The focus was to learn about risk management.

The camp started with a bike ride around the Pencarrow south coast into Catchpool Valley campsite, a night camping followed by a walk up into the Ōrongorongo Valley for another night of camping under the stars.

The Year 10 Leadership programme is well underway, with each class attending two hours of leadership training with Ignite Sport at their new Bell Road premises. Our Year 11 Geographers have headed to Martinborough this week for their field trip. Education outside the classroom (EOTC) is essential but does come with complications, costs and lost learning time in other subjects. We try to balance all those factors carefully, but it can be challenging. These EOTC experiences are memorable, involve real-world learning experiences and create valuable connections to our community and environment.

I want to tell you about our fire evacuation system; as you may have heard, we have had several recent evacuations. We used to have an old eclectic set of different alarm systems requiring us to look at five stations to understand where the issue was. We have undergone a fire protection upgrade and now have a modern, fully functioning system communicating to one central station. Our new system is too sensitive and very responsive. Most of the false alarms have been triggered by bugs, ants, and drips of water in our unused leaky buildings. We are working with specialists to understand how we can improve this situation.

Ngā mihi nui,

Denise Johnson, Principal

DONATIONS OF KAI NEEDED - A MESSAGE FROM OUR WELLBEING TEAM

Every year we see a number of students who are coming to school who haven't had breakfast and are without kai for the day. This year is no exception. Some of the charities that have provided support for students in the past are no longer able to provide this service and we are reaching out to our school community to see if this is something you as a whānau would like to help with.

Donations of grab-and-go foods such as muesli bars, spreads for sandwiches or anything that fills a hungry tummy would be greatly appreciated. Please contact Claire Ross (claire.ross@hvhs.school.nz ) from our Wellbeing Team if you would like to help.

HVHS's Student Run Coffee Shop - 2022 Donation of Profits

The Barista Management team of Aidan Meehan (12PF), Jacob Oliver (12BQ), Everett Parker (12HU) and Morgan Harvey (12PF) have decided to donate 2022 HVHS Coffee Shop profits ($3,000) to the disaster relief fund in support of the many people who have lost homes and livelihoods.

The Barista team will donate the profit in the hope that it will be used to purchase necessities for displaced families. The Coffee House team continues looking for opportunities to provide community support and has offered to donate the daily takings to Jude Allen’s (Pathways Department) disaster relief fundraiser. Jude's Year 12 Employment Ready class will run a sausage sizzle in the next few weeks.
