In many cultures, education is thought to be something that is only done in school?
Many secondary EL parents don’t come to conferences because they don’t think it’s their place to interfere in education. They’d often be happy to help if asked and would love to hear positive notes about their kids. To reach parents that don’t speak English, we have interpreters and liaisons. Reach out to your EL teacher to get the name and number of one.
Etiquette When Using An Interpreter
Look at and speak directly to the parent, not to the interpreter.
Speak in short simple sentences, pausing for the interpreter.
Speak slowly, clearly and in a normal tone of voice.
Use simple vocabulary to express your meaning, avoiding slang/idioms/acronyms.
Ask one question at a time.
- Remember that it will take twice the amount of time to talk about things during the conference.
