Homecoming festivities set for next week
Harrisonville High School is planning Homecoming activities for the week of September 24-28. Those activities include spirit weeks at all schools, the parade, the community pep rally, and the coronation.
The theme for Homecoming 2018 is Victory is Timeless and the spirit days at HHS reflect the theme. Monday is The Fresh 50's; Tuesday is Roaring 20's; Wednesday is Back to the 80's; Thursday is That 70's Showcase; and Friday is Wildcats Through The Ages. Harrisonville Middle School spirit days are Monday-50's crazy socks/sock hop attire, Tuesday-20's dress in comfy clothes (work-out/sweats), Wednesday-80's crazy hair/80's hair/80's attire, Thursday-70's tie dye/peace symbols, and Friday-blue and white. Then the spirit days at Harrisonville Early Childhood Center, Harrisonville Elementary School and McEowen Elementary School are Monday - Crazy Sock Day, Tuesday - Luau Day, Wednesday - KC Sports Day, Thursday - Tie Dye Day, and Friday - Blue & White/Wildcat Day.
The Homecoming Parade will begin a bit earlier this year. It will start at 12:30 p.m. The parade route is a little different as well (see photo). The parade will begin in the City Park, proceed south on Bradley, west on Pearl, south on Independence through the four-way stop at Mechanic, east on Washington to HMS, north on Highland Drive, east on Finney to the HMS/ECC bus lane. All Harrisonville students will watch the parade from Washington and Highland Drive.
The registration form for the parade can be found on the district website - www.harrisonvilleschools.org.
Immediately following the parade, the community is invited to the Community Pep Rally at Memorial Stadium at 2 p.m. The pep rally will include candidate and fall sports team introductions, performances by the band, cheerleaders, and dance team, and games.
The coronation of the Homecoming King and Queen will take place before the football game beginning at approximately 6:30 p.m. The candidates are pictured. The Queen candidates are (FRONT ROW) Hannah Kreimeyer, Haley Holden, Brecken Moreland, Regan Ours, Jenna Hart, and Peyton Zaring. The King candidates are (BACK ROW) Tanner Schaub, Conner Blentlinger, Alek Baker, Jack DeVenney, Isaiah Patrick, and Peyton Holden.
The Harrisonville Public School Foundation is hosting additional activities as part of Homecoming. The Foundation’s golf tournament is Friday, Sept. 28 at 8 a.m. at Hoots Hollow. The Catch the Spirit 5K Color Walk/Run is Saturday, Sept. 29 at 8 a.m. at HHS. Both event registrations are still open and accessible on the district website - www.harrisonvilleschools.org.
In addition, the Foundation is holding two events specifically for HHS alumni. There will be an alumni tailgate on Friday, Sept. 28 from 5-7 p.m. in the parking lot northeast of Memorial Stadium. The tailgate is free for alumni and their families and will include hot dogs, chips, drinks, and cookies. RSVPs are not required but encouraged for planning purposes. Again, tailgate registration is online at www.harrisonvilleschools.org.
Finally, the Foundation will offer tours of HHS on Saturday, Sept. 29 at 10 a.m. Like the tailgate, RSVPs are not required but encouraged for planning purposes. Go to www.harrisonvilleschools.org/foundation.
HHS teacher nominated for national award
Harrisonville High School social studies teacher Eric DeVenney has been nominated as a 2018-19 LifeChanger of the Year. The LifeChanger program recognizes and rewards K-12 school employees who make a positive difference in the lives of students. DeVenney was nominated by an anonymous colleague.
His nomination said, "He has the ability to find teaching moments with students that turn losing moments into positive life lessons," his nominator said. "His classroom is rarely empty, and he has a genuine smile, handshake, or hug for anyone he sees. As the Harrisonville School District Educator of the Year in 2017, it is clear that the staff, students, and community of Harrisonville believe that Eric DeVenney is a true LifeChanger."
His profile can be found online at www.lifechangeroftheyear.com.
An independent selection committee will select 16 LifeChange winners. One of the awards - the LifeChanger Spirit Award - has a community support component. It is given to the nominee whose community demonstrates the most support for his or her nomination. To support DeVenney’s nomination, you can leave a comment on his profile on the LifeChanger website and share his profile on social media using the #LCOY.
DeVenney is in his 19th year of teaching at HHS; he also coaches wrestling. He has a bachelor’s and a master’s degree from the University of Missouri and a specialist’s degree from the University of Central Missouri.

Opportunities
Socks & Undies for September Blue Barrel Collection
Bright Futures is collecting all sizes of socks and undies during the month of September. Donations can be dropped off at any blue barrel. Those locations are Cass County Public Library, Harrisonville Christian School, Chamber of Commerce, Commerce Bank, Community Bank of Harrisonville, Cornerstone Community Church, Community Center, Crossroads Assembly, Hawthorn Bank, Heartland Baptist, Nazarene Church, United Methodist Church, Schroeder Chiropractic, Quality Auto Service, Brick House Coffee, The Vault, and all schools.
Classroom Partners at McEowen Elementary School
Classroom Partners are groups, businesses, or organizations that "adopt" a classroom at McEowen Elementary. At least once a month, the partner visits the classroom to interact with students. The activities done during the visit are based on conversations between the partner and teacher. It's a flexible program which allows the teacher and partner to shape it.
The Partner can be a formal group (Sunday School class, civic organization, social club) or informal (think Bunco or Trivia team) or a business. The purpose is to bring positive adult role models into our students' lives.
For more information or to become a partner, contact Jill Filer at 380-2727, ext. 1224 or jill.filer@harrisonvilleschools.org.
Interpreter
Bright Futures is looking for a Mandarin/English interpreter for one of our elementary school families for Parent-Teacher Conference in October. If you can help, please contact Sarah Enkey at 380-4131, ext. 3837 or sarah.enkey@harrisonvilleschools.org.
Blue Light Special (pictured below)
Any uniformed first responder is invited to enjoy breakfast or lunch at any of our schools any time. We appreciate the work they do each and every day to keep our families safe and this is just our way of saying “thank you.”
The Blue Light Special program also helps achieve one of Bright Future's goals - bringing positive adult role models into our children’s lives. By interacting with first responders, our children see that there are many people in our community who care for them and want them to succeed beyond their parents and teachers.
No RSVP is required for first responders, but they are asked to where their uniform. Upon arrival, guests should check into the school's main office and school staff will direct you to the cafeteria.
