Expect Excellence In Everything
December 4, 2020
A Note from Mr. Bender
Dear Parents,
Welcome to December! It is hard to believe that there are only two more weeks left in the first semester. Teachers will be communicating with you if your child needs to complete unfinished work or redo assignments. Incomplete work or assignments that have not been turned in can negatively impact your child’s grade. If you have questions about your child’s grades or progress as we approach the end of the semester, please contact your child’s teacher. Let’s finish the final two weeks strong!
December Reading Rewards logs went home in your child’s Friday Folder. Please encourage your child to read during the month of December. Reading with your child is one of the most beneficial things you can do to support their education.
Speaking of reading, your child can earn a free Gwinnett Stripers baseball ticket just for reading. From now through December 31st of this year, any student that reads four books and submits everything online using the online link will be eligible to receive a free ticket to a 2021 Gwinnett Stripers game. These books can be any books that the students are required to read for school or separate from their required reading at school. Once the student has completed the reading they simply need their parent to fill out the online submission form using the link below.
The district has added an additional teacher planning day on Wednesday, January 6th. This will be a teacher workday. Students will return from break on Thursday, January 7th.
Best,
Mike Bender
Principal

You are an important partner with your child’s teacher, whether your child is learning at home or at school. To help you support your child’s learning, GCPS is launching a new initiative called AKS at Home. With this project, families will learn ways to help their child practice skills they are learning in class as part of the district’s Academic Knowledge and Skills (AKS) curriculum. Parents have access to a library of recorded sessions and tipsheets. Find more information on the AKS at Home web page.
*New sessions have been added for all grade levels beginning next week! Check out the AKS at Home website for dates and times!*

Reading Rewards
Paper reading logs for the month of December should be in the Friday, Dec. 4th student folders! The widget in eCLASS has been updated with the December digital log. I hope your child returned their reading log for November. We will recognize and reward our November readers next week!
The monthly requirement is to read, outside of school hours, at least 20 minutes a day for at least 20 days of the month. Students are expected to list book titles and minutes read on each of the 20 dates that are logged on the form. Parents must initial each of the entry dates. For students to be recognized, the reading log must be turned in on time and considered complete.
Paper logs can be submitted to the homeroom teacher as soon as the log is complete. Digital logs can be uploaded and submitted to the assignment link provided in the Reading Rewards eCLASS widget.. There should be no paper or digital logs received before the 21st of each month.
If you have any questions about the Reading Rewards program, please email Jennifer.Alden@gcpsk12.org.

Georgia Picture Book Nominee Spotlight: "The Scarecrow"
The Scarecrow
Written by Beth Ferry and Illustrated by the Fan Brothers
In this beautifully crafted picture book, the lonely scarecrow goes against his nature to save a baby crow that has fallen from midair. The scarecrow forges an unlikely friendship with the crow that is tested by the changing of the seasons.
After reading at least ten of the twenty nominees, students will vote for their favorite book. All votes will be submitted to the University of Georgia in late February. The Georgia Picture Book Award Winner will be announced in March. The purpose of this annual program is to foster a love of reading in the children of Georgia and to introduce students to books of literary excellence.
