A Message From Neryda
Consultation meetings re: Future Schooling options in the Hawera District is underway. Hopefully you have all attended meetings or plan to, so that you can be fully informed of possibilities for schooling in our district. This is an important opportunity for everyone to have their say so please take up the opportunity and have a voice.
It is hard to believe that we are already into March. Focus thus far at school has been around establishing a positive school culture.
School and classroom routines are now firmly entrenched. Behavioural expectations are clear and our system of rewarding positive behaviour is well received by students.
Recently an audit was undertaken by the Ministry of Education into the same and I am delighted to say we achieved a very positive rating, a huge improvement on last year’s scoring.
Students have and continue to be encouraged to participate in activity in the playground over interval and lunch breaks, and the library is now open for those who enjoy quieter activity.
Our learning assistants are back working in classes and we are actively recruiting new personnel to assist in all classes across the school.
Next week on Tuesday school will be closed. Teachers join with other schools within our community and undertake professional development around our localised curriculum with “Project Awa” being its focus. Local Rivers and waterways will provide the basis from which learning will be undertaken with the digital curriculum being at the forefront.
Relationship Based Learning is the lens through which the curriculum is delivered in our school with teachers receiving coaching as to how best meet the needs of our students via external facilitator input. Building teacher capability through this coaching tool will assist in adding further depth to teachers ability for better student outcomes.
The weeks are flying by- we look forward to a long weekend. Safe travel to those who are lucky enough to be heading away and to all others have a restful break - we look forward to seeing you all back after our Teachers Only Day on Wednesday 11March.

Community Engagement on Future Education Provision for Hawera
The Ministry of Education is currently working on plans for future schooling in the Hawera area. The Ministry is committed to investing in the property at Hawera Intermediate and Hawera High School. There will be a significant capital investment and so the Ministry is keen to renew discussions about how to achieve the best possible outcome for current and future students.
Many of you may recall a similar process that took place in 2017. As there have been changes to schooling in Hawera since this time (changes to boards, principals etc) the Ministry is leading a new engagement process. This is an exciting opportunity for parents and the whole community to contribute innovative ideas and have input into the future of schooling in Hawera.
The first phase of the engagement will involve face-to-face public workshops, to gather and explore ideas about future education provision. They will be facilitated by Dr Gabrielle Wall and are scheduled as follows:
Whānau and Community members
- Wednesday March 4th, 7 – 8pm, Hawera Community Centre
- Thursday March 5th, 7 – 8pm, Robert Gibson Hall (Manaia)
These sessions are all open to the public - parents and interested community members are welcome. Similar content will be covered in all sessions, so feel free to attend whichever time best suits your schedule.
Focus groups are also being held with students to gather their input during this phase. The ideas and themes generated through this first phase of engagement will then be used to construct an online survey that will make it possible to identify which options and ideas have a wider base of support. The online survey will be open later in Term 1.

Kia Ora, I am the teacher in Room 11, Whanau Leader of Waihi and Sport Co-ordinator. I enjoy the challenges that these three roles provide me as I get to follow my passion for teaching as well as leading my team where we can develop students academically, culturally and physically. I have been teaching for over 20 years with a variety of roles.
I was born in Motherwell, Scotland but spent my primary school years growing up in Southern Africa and my high school years in Papua New Guinea. I got my teaching degree in Australia. In 1996 I came to New Zealand and have taught in a variety of schools in Taranaki and Bay of Plenty. My husband, Kyle is the manager of Noel Leeming in Hawera and we have 1 son, Callum who is at Hawera High School.

Kia Ora, this I am the teacher in Room 6, where I will work closely with the students to raise their achievement and build social and emotional skills which will help them over the course of the year and beyond. I am also the Assistant Principal, which creates plenty of learning and leadership opportunities, within the school and in the wider community.
I am originally from South Africa and have lived in NZ for 23 years, so I call myself a “kiwi with an accent”. I live in the country where I garden happily, occasionally build garden artworks, read books and help out with the horses, cats and dogs.

Our family of five moved from South Africa to New Zealand in April 2000 and we are celebrating our 20th anniversary this year. I am a classroom release teacher and I also teach Digital Technology in Room 4. This year my classes will learn about digital citizenship and how to code robots.
My husband and I love travelling and we have visited the whole of the North Island. Our dream is to buy a motorhome and explore the beautiful South Island when we retire. I enjoy cooking, sewing and tramping.

I arrived in New Zealand in July 2019 and have two daughters who attend Hawera High School. My wife will be arriving this coming week and I look forward to introducing her to all the amazing places we have already discovered here in Taranaki and exploring the natural beauty on our doorstep together.
Healthy Hygiene Habits at School
Whether your child is starting school for the first time or returning after the holidays, mixing with lots of other children will expose him or her to many more germs than there are at home. While you can’t help prevent contact with germs (and remember that exposure to some germs is a good thing), you can help reduce the risk of your child picking up through healthy hygiene habits
How do germs spread at school?
School children often pick up germs. These germs can spread very quickly from child to child by touching a contaminated surface. Germs also spread very quickly in the air via coughs and sneezes, as well as by eating contaminated food.
Why is good hygiene important?
Once your child has picked up germs, germs can quickly spread to the rest of your family at home. Bouts of the common cold and upset tummies are common at the start of a new term – both in schools and families. So, helping your child understand about good hygiene will go a long way to helping them and the rest of your family stay healthy.
Top tips for good school hygiene
1. Keep hands clean
Thorough hand washing is one of the most effective ways to help prevent the spread of germs in schools. Teach your children how and when to wash their hands (rubbing hands together for at least 20 seconds using soap and clean running water). Always wash hands:
- After using the toilet
- Before eating
- After playing outside
- After touching something dirty
- After coughing, sneezing or blowing their nose
- After touching a dirty tissue
- After petting animals
- Whenever hands look dirty
2. Coughs and sneezes spread diseases
Teach your children to cover their nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing to stop germs from becoming airborne. Throw used tissues in a bin and always wash hands with soap and water afterwards.
If there isn’t a tissue available, encourage your child to sneeze or cough into the crook of their elbow instead of their hands, to reduce the spread of bacteria.
3. Healthy diet
Whether your child has a packed lunch or something from the canteen, a varied and balanced diet will help protect their health and promote proper growth and development. Eating properly also aids concentration during lessons.
When preparing a packed lunch, make sure you wash and dry your hands before you start. Your kitchen surfaces should also be clean and disinfected. Then:
- Check all foods are within their best-before dates
- Use an airtight, rigid lunch box that is washed and dried before and after use
- Wash fruit, salad and vegetables thoroughly in fresh clean water
- Try to prepare food fresh each day, as there will be less opportunity for germs to grow
4. Drink plenty of water
Water is much healthier than drinks that are high in sugar, sweeteners, additives and caffeine. Encourage your child to drink plenty of water throughout the day, as even slight dehydration can lead to poor concentration, lethargy, irritability and headaches.
How you can help
As well as encouraging good hygiene in children, you can also help prevent the spread of germs in school by following these basic steps:
- Keep school bags clean and free from food remnants, especially if your child carries a packed lunch to school
- Make sure your children change their socks and underwear daily
- Wash school uniforms on a high temperature to kill bacteria. For delicate clothes that cannot be washed at 60°C, try adding Laundry Sanitiser to your wash.
A REMINDER
Enjoy a long weekend!

WHANAU SWIMMING CANCELLED
The uptake of student participation in whanau swimming sports has been poor. Due to only 1/3 of students opting to swim, we have decided to have just one day at the pools where those wishing to compete in school swimming sports will have the opportunity to shine.
Swimming Sports will take place on Thursday 12 March - mark this on your calendar , we look forward to many supporters joining us on this day.
NETBALL TRIALS CONTINUE
Selectors
This year we have three independent selectors, they are Brenda Pitton, Tracey Hardy and Jenny Brewer (all top coaches). We ask that parents and whanau please respect our selection process. If you think a genuine error has been made then please contact Liz Stewart after the trials. We traditionally have around 8 teams and will look at having no more than this.
JUCIES AND MOOSIES
Our PTA is having its annual Easter Extravaganza Raffle. Please can families donate an Easter egg or chocolate product to support this fund raising effort. Donations can be handed in to the school office.
