Cardinal Connection
September 2019
Letter from Principal
Dear SPHS Family and Friends,
As I like to say this time of year: Happy New Year! We are so excited about the start of the
2019-2020 school year! The staff has worked hard to get everything ready and it will be nice
to finally have our students back in the building.
With the start of the New Year, I want to make sure everyone is aware of a few procedural
items. All of these topics can be found in the student handbook, which is available online with
paper copies available at the high school front desk. I ask that parents and students become
familiar with the handbook as it can answer many questions you might have. I will highlight a
few common situations that we see:
Sun Prairie High School is a closed campus. This means that students cannot leave the building during the lunch periods. This is for the safety of our students and to ensure we know who is in the building at all times. Students who leave, could face discipline referrals which can be found in the student handbook.
All deliveries (other than those needed for classes) will be held at the main office until the end
of the day. This creates the least amount of disruption to our students. Also, if parents choose to bring in food during lunch, they can only bring in food for their own child. Again, this is for the safety of students with allergies. Students are not allowed to order lunches for delivery.
● Student parking is by permit only. All students must register their car and obtain a
parking permit to park on school property. Also, students must park in the designated student stalls. Students who repeatedly park illegally could have their parking privileges revoked and/or car towed at owner’s expense.
● Students are most successful when they are present every day and on time. We
encourage all students to be at school and on time for all classes. While we understand that inclement weather or other factors can impact attendance, we ask students to plan for such events in order to avoid becoming habitually tardy or truant.
● Cell phones are permitted during passing time and lunch when they are used
appropriately. Use of cell phones is not allowed in the classroom unless instructed by a teacher.
● Our amazing student services department is here to answer any scheduling questions you may have.
○ They are also a great resource for college admissions and will be meeting with sophomore students and families to plan out their schedule to meet the individual needs of every student.
○ As an administrative team, we feel it is important to build positive relationships with the students and families. In order to help foster that, the students are divided by alphabet, which allows our administrators to get to know their students better. Below is the breakdown:
o Mrs. Walter, Associate Principal in charge of teaching and learning.
o Mr. Whalley, Associate Principal for students with last name A-C
o Mr. Ertel, Dean of Students for students with last name D-Mi
o Mrs. Paynter, Dean of students for students with last name Mj-Z
If you have not already done so, please like our Facebook page as we will be sharing
information and celebrations throughout the year. This year we want to make sure to
showcase our #SPcardinalpride and all the amazing work our students and staff are doing. As always, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out!
All my best,
Keith Nerby, principal
