Lisbon Community Celebration TOMORROW
Lisbon Families,
I am very excited to share with you that Lisbon Elementary School is partnering with the Mt. Airy Patriot Guard and Homes for our Troops to host a special Community Kickoff event on Saturday, October 8, 2022, to celebrate the groundbreaking and building of Army SGT Brandon Huff’s future home right here in Woodbine, MD. Homes for our Troops is building a specially adapted custom home for Army SGT Brandon Huff. I would like to personally invite you to help us welcome SGT Huff and his wife to the Lisbon community and Howard County Public School System. SGT Huff and his wife plan on having a family and their children will be attending Lisbon Elementary School.
Sergeant Huff was injured when he was leading a three-man team to secure a suspected car bomb in Mosul, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device (IED) was triggered nearby. The blast resulted in the loss of his left leg, a traumatic brain injury (TBI), and extensive abdominal injuries.
The invitation to our Kickoff is below. Please be sure to join us tomorrow morning at 9:30 am for registration and check in. Please do not worry if you did not RSVP! There is still space available for all to attend! Let's give Sgt. Huff a warm Lisbon welcome!
If you are volunteering for this event, please plan to arrive at 8:15 am.
Please park in one of the following places:
- Lisbon ES Main Staff Parking Lot
- Lisbon ES Overflow Parking Lot
- Lisbon United Methodist Parking Lot
Please DO NOT park in our BUS LOOP, as it will be used for Sgt. Huff and his escort vehicles.
Thank you in advance for all your support, we are honored to be part of Brandon’s journey.
Mrs. Anoff
Mr. Scobie

Congratulations to Ms. Dottie!
Today, we bid goodbye to our beloved day building supervisor, Ms. Dottie Smith. She will be undergoing knee surgery and will be retiring following her surgery effective December 1. Ms. Dottie has been with the HCPSS for 25 years, and moved to Lisbon as our day building supervisor in 2015. This morning our staff celebrated her and we will continue to celebrate her during our lunch shifts, so that all of the children are able to be a part of honoring her. Ms. Dottie has left a long-lasting impact on the children who have had the pleasure of knowing her. We will miss you, Ms. Dottie!
American Heart Association
We are so excited to be starting our Jump Rope Unit in PE class to get ready for our Jump Rope For Heart Event on November, 7th! This event will be held during your students’ Related Arts time at school. Lisbon students will be working hard all month to learn new jumping skills to prepare for the event! We will be explaining to the students what the American Heart Association does and why we choose to participate in this event as a school. There is an option to raise money for the American Heart Association, but the students do not need to in order to participate! That is a family decision! Be on the lookout for other opportunities to learn and participate in challenges as a family on Canvas! If you would like to check out our school website you may do so here http://www.heart.org/khc
We are so excited to see what our Heart Heros will learn this year!
The American Heart Association offers programs for the classroom and for the gym to get help kids healthy and performing better in school.

Naming of High School 13
The Howard County Public School System (HCPSS) is now accepting public suggestions of names for High School #13, scheduled to open for the 2023-24 school year.
Howard County Board of Education Policy 6050 - Naming and Renaming Schools requires that all schools be named for geographic terms related to areas of the county served. Policy 6050 also does not allow for schools to be named for specific individuals.
Students, staff and family members are encouraged to submit their name suggestions using the online form. All suggestions must be provided through the online form by Friday, October 14 at 5:00 p.m. to be considered.
All names will be reviewed and considered by a committee of HCPSS stakeholders and a list of recommendations will be presented to the Board of Education for selection at a future date.

Additionally, families will receive strategies to help ensure successful parent-teacher conferences. This session is for families of students in elementary, middle, and high school. Lisbon Halloween Celebrations
Halloween Parade
On Friday, October 28, 2022, Lisbon ES will celebrate Halloween with a few adjustments. Our annual parade and classroom activities will be limited to students and staff only. Classrooms will have fall activities but unfortunately we will NOT be unable to have food. Due to logistical concerns, student costumes MUST fit over top of your child's clothing so they can get dressed inside the classroom and independently. Please think through your child's costume choice, as they will need to put it on with little to no assistance.
Please review the following reminders/updates.
- Any costumes that perpetuate violence, have any blood, gore, scary masks, or contain any type of weapons are prohibited. Props that come with costumes that are “play weapons” are not allowed in school. This includes but is not limited to toy guns, knives, swords, sickles, pitchforks, etc.
- If you prefer that your child does not take part in the parade, please send a note to your child’s teacher and contact Mrs. Anoff at debra_anoff@hcpss.org.
- Thank you for your cooperation.
Planning a Trip?
If your student will be absent for 3 or more days, please fill out the Extended Absence/Discretionary Absence form (see below) and return it to the front office.
Flu Vaccination Clinic
Flu shots are coming to Lisbon Elementary on FRIDAY, OCTOBER 14th. They will be given at NO CHARGE TO YOU. Now, more than ever, it is important to protect your family through vaccinations.
If you would like your child to be vaccinated, please register BEFORE Saturday, October 8:
Fill out the consent form online at:
https://www.marylandvax.org/appointment/en/reg/1582905605

Influenza, also known as the flu, is a serious illness that affects people of all ages. One of the best ways to prevent the flu is through vaccinations. We are pleased to join with the Maryland Partnership for Prevention (MPP) to offer flu vaccinations at our school.
The vaccine is quadrivalent and it does not have preservatives (thimerosal, mercury) because they use single-dose syringes.
We urge you to protect your family from the flu. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that everyone ages 6 months and older get a flu shot. Please visit www.cdc.gov/flu/index.htm for more information about the flu vaccine.
Student Absences
Please send all absence notes to lesabsence@hcpss.org and include the following in your email:
- Student's first and last name
- Grade level
- Date(s) of absence
- Reason for absence

Lisbon Liaisons Program
Do you and your family:
Like to attend our LES events?
Enjoy meeting and connecting with new people?
Want to serve as a helpful point of contact for another family?
Care about creating a community that is invested in celebrating our diversity?
If so, please consider joining our Lisbon Liaison Program. This program was developed to ensure that all families at Lisbon feel welcome in our community and to encourage engagement with our community, populations:
- Families who have recently moved to the community and have a child(ren) in attendance at Lisbon.
- Elementary school families in which the adult caretakers are not conversant in English and have child(ren) in attendance at Lisbon Elementary School.
Liaison families serve as points of contact and are familiar faces for school events and for the day-to-day questions that may arise as these families move through Lisbon Elementary. The goal of the program is to ensure that all families understand that they are valuable members of our community and to close any gaps that may exist in a family’s ability to access the resources and opportunities provided by the Lisbon Elementary School community. If you are interested, please contact Ellen Bockelman at meabbock@gmail.com.
