IN CASE YOU MISSED IT
The big reminder of the day was "Above all, do no harm."
As school counselors, we are the keepers of their personal, social, and emotional development. Working in education there are many complications with this task. Some of these are:
Legal status of Minors
In loco parentis – standing in place of the parent
Trusting relationship
Informed consent – it is not developmentally possible for a child to give this
Skill level
Setting
Parental rightsWhen we are looking at ethics, law is the floor and ethics are the ceiling. For many of us, when we listen to court cases that have occurred in education, we think "well that's common sense." While many of these cases end in favor of the educator or school district, there are cases that ruled against them or the school district settled. Sometimes it's an err in judgment or an honest mistake but other times, someone crosses the line and the action is illegal. We are very fortunate as counselors to have organizations like American Counseling Association (ACA) and American School Counseling Association (ASCA) to provide us with documented Ethical Standards (see links below). The law is the minimum, which everyone can meet. Ethics are a higher standard that we should hold ourselves to. If you ever have any doubt as to what you should do, consult, consult, consult!

MI STUDENT AID/SCHOLARSHIPS AND GRANTS (MISSG)
The State of Michigan Department of Treasury-Student Financial Services Bureau is in the process of launching a new online portal to help counselors and students have easier access to Financial Aid opportunities for students who qualify. MI Student Aid/Scholarships and Grants (MISSG) has created the portal where students will be able to check their eligibility and complete necessary forms for any of the State programs including the Tuition Incentive Program(TIP) and the Michigan Competitive Scholarship(MCS). Students must complete a FAFSA or be TIP eligible to use the portal. The portal will make it easier for students to update their information such as their address and will directly connect to the Community Colleges for those students who are TIP eligible.
Counselors can use the portal to obtain valuable date on FAFSA completion and TIP and MCS eligibility to help increase college accessibility. The portal will also allow you to print MCS qualifiers and certificates.
To obtain access to the portal, counselors should go to www.Michigan.gov/missg. From there you will be instructed to complete a Data Use Agreement and a Data Receiver Agreement which must be signed by an administrator and returned. Once the information is received each person assigned as a data receiver will receive an email to access the information by creating an online account.
The website also contains free publications that can be ordered to use to advertise and promote the Mi Student Aid website and all of their programs. The portal is expected to be up and running soon.
New Ways to Manage Unfriendly Behavior and Prevent Bullying
Participants in the Surviving the Social Jungle Conference will learn 12 steps to preventing children from being bullied. Adults will learn how to teach kids the skills and strategies needed to shut down situations before it turns into bullying. Strategies include: the words to say, the tone of voice, and the body language to use in managing unfriendly situations with peers. Kid participants (Elementary School Track Grades 3-5 and Middle School Track) will learn the lessons and participate in activities at the various stations.
Schools are encouraged to register a group of students and/or staff to participate as well as sending the flyer out to parents.
The cost of the conference is $15.
