November: Dig into Differentiation
2016 How to differentiate in Math
Building Mathematical Thinkers
WHY/HOW/WHAT Goals for 2017 Building Mathematical Thinkers Webinars: To ensure that our teachers...
- Have knowledge, strategies and resources & connect all of these resources to the needs of students
- Actively participate through questioning, contributing, and implementing new ideas
- Understand and build their practice using "Teacher Behaviors that Matter" for teaching Mathematics
Goals for Today's session
Today we will discuss a couple of ways to differentiate math instruction to support the "Teacher behaviors that matter."
NLCI and the Core Four
How do the "Teacher behaviors that Matter" support differentiated instruction?
- Project a positive attitude about math and about students’ ability to “do” math
- Keep students actively engaged in doing mathematics
- Influence learning by posing challenging and interesting questions
- Provide ongoing opportunities for students to solve challenging problems
- Provide students with a variety of opportunities to communicate mathematically
- Encourage students to share their mathematical ideas while working in pairs and groups
- Demonstrate acceptance of students divergent ideas
- Provide students with a variety of manipulatives
Differentiation is a regular part of lesson planning:
Teachers will know and be able to:
- Use assessment as the key to purposeful planning
- "Think about" differentiating in many ways
- Choose resources that will produce your desired outcomes
Formative Assessment is key to differentiating instruction!
"The goal of formative assessment is to monitor student learning to provide ongoing feedback that can be used by instructors to improve their teaching and by students to improve their learning. More specifically, formative assessments: help teachers and students identify their strengths and weaknesses and target areas that need work.”
Think about both math content and vocabulary:
Content goal: students will solve addition problems with two digit numbers in a variety of ways
Math Vocabulary: add, sum numbers, digit, two digit number
General Academic Vocabulary (tier 2): strategy, tools, different, solution, answer, solve.
