Easter Term - Week 4 Mon 1st Feb - Fri 5th Feb

Language Arts

This week, the Grade 4 students have used the knowledge they have researched and gained from the IPC unit, ‘The Human Body’ to plan a new information text. Linking ‘The Human Body’ research from their IPC learning and their understanding of how to compose and plan an information report has consolidated the students learning in a meaningful way. The students are looking forward to publishing their draft reports when they return from the break.

In reading, students are immersed into information texts during guided reading sessions. These sessions allow the students to learn new information about a range of topics, while also understanding how to compose interesting writing pieces.

Over the Chinese New Year break, if you are travelling, encourage your children to read the information texts that you may come across in magazines, on signs or in books. This will give them the opportunity to see how informative this writing can be. Please also encourage your children to read everyday while on the break.


The focus of learning this week in Maths was calculating the area of composite shapes. This has proved to be quite engaging and challenging! The children have used their prior knowledge and methods to find the area of rectangles using a range of strategies.

In the split and add strategy, composite shapes are broken down into smaller rectangles which can be calculated easily and added together. The take-away method involves calculating the area of a bigger rectangle before subtracting the area of a smaller rectangle.

The children were able to demonstrate both methods in class this week while preparing to complete their end of unit review.

This brings to a close our unit on Area and Perimeter. After the CNY holiday, we will begin a new unit on Decimals. We can also look forward to celebrating Maths week in week 7!


This week in our IPC learning, we have been looking closely at the muscles in our body and the role they play in providing movement to the joints and skeleton.

In particular, we have looked at the heart, a muscle that is quite different from other muscles in a variety of ways. We looked at the different parts of the heart before learning what they each do. This led to further knowledge being gained as to the role the heart plays in our circulatory system.

Fascinating learning that the children really enjoyed and were able to link to how their body reacts during exercise and rest.

Next week, we progress onto the human lungs and respiratory system, learning how they are linked to the heart and how all of these work together.

After the CNY holiday, we will be continue our focus on the spelling of words containing the letter strings -ear, -ight and -ough.

Its is important that children know that spelling a word as it sounds is not always a reliable strategy. Understanding common letter patterns and the most likely phonemes (sounds) for the pattern will help with spelling.

This week in particular we will be concentrating on -ight and -ough.

The letter strings -ight and -ough can have different pronunciations

e.g. ite as in night, ate as in weight.

e.g. o as in dough, uf as in enough, ow as in bough, or as in nought, off as in trough

Words to be learnt this week;

night, weight, tightly, freight, almighty, dough, drought, bough, enough, trough

Extension words:

heightened, knighted, weightlessness, thought, breakthrough


Read a 'Just Right' book for 20 minutes or more each evening. Share and discuss with family members what you have read. Practice reading aloud in front of your family members using clear projection, fluency and expression.

Children will begin their two week 'Human Skeleton Memory Challenge' project.

Full details will be given out to the children, explained in full and entered into their home learning journals.

Completion date for the project is Friday 26th February.

Grade 4 Expedition

Having received several enquiries from children and parents over the last week or two, we would like to provide some clarity on the above.

At the moment, whilst no final destination for the G4 Expedition had been finalised, please be assured that all efforts are being made to identify a suitable destination that will provide all of the ingredients we require to make the expedition a meaningful, memorable and enjoyable experience for the children. This process has involved Mr Burke and Mr Dalgarno visiting several venues with varying degree of success and we we are continuing to work with diligence and rigour.

Safety, comfort, catering, challenge, education and age appropriate activities are very much at the forefront of our requirements, as we conduct our search.

We hope to be in a position to confirm our expedition venue, dates and itinerary in the very near future.

In the meantime, we trust this provides a little more clarity and we thank you for your patience and understanding.

We're "Lighting Up The Flame"

From the music department:

The Grade 4's are participating in the 'Voices Around The World, Project 2016.

The song title is Lighting Up The Flame and links with the Rio Olympics theme and in particular the lighting up of the Olympic torch.

We have received the resources for the project and already started learning the song. We will need to submit our audio/video tracks to VATW for mixing on to the final recording by 31 May. We hope to complete ours by end of April.

This year's project will have over 500 schools from around the world participating and it is estimated that 7,000+ children will be involved. Here are the lyrics to
