Students will be starting Integers, which are positive and negative numbers. Students' objectives are:
Relate positive and negative numbers to the real world.
Understand integers and other rational numbers as points on a number line.
Understand the sign of a number indicates its direction on the number line from zero.
Recognize that the opposite of an opposite of a number is the number itself; 0 is its own opposite.
A solid understanding of integers is necessary for success in later grades because integers are essential part of algebra.

Mrs. Reasbeck erica_reasbeck@iss.k12.nc.us
The science classes have just finished up studying the Hydrosphere. Mrs. Reasbeck and Mr. McKay took their classes outside for an unique experience, where they used water quality assessment tools, borrowed from NC State, as a means to assess our local water quality. After learning about water quality in the classroom, it was a great experience for students to literally get in the creek and run their own diagnostic assessment. As the 2nd marking period concludes we will be moving our focus in the classroom to understanding cell structure and function. Additionally, we will be exploring pandemics and epidemics as they relate to human exposure and prevention.

For the next few weeks, students will be studying the causes and effects of the American Civil War. We will with antebellum United States and we will explore the abolition movement, culture-altering documents, and key individuals in American and North Carolina history. Our weekly current event assignment will compare and contrast race relations in the United States from the past and to the present. The American Civil War is a popular period in American History, and I urge both students and their families to share any stories or materials related to the time period.
- Please remember to clip and turn in your boxtops. These can be turned in for money for our school, and they start to add up quickly. Please have your student turn them into the main office, his/her homeroom teacher, or Mrs. Evans (mevans@iss.k12.nc.us) Thanks!
