ATV Concerns

Deaths of people using ATVs on public roads have increased since 1982. The Institute for Highway Safety want to try to find a way to limit the amount of deaths in children between the age of 13-16. ATV dealers are forbidden from selling adult ATVs to families purchasing them for children under agreements between CPSC and manufacturers.

ATV Safety Facts

    • Wear over-the-ankle boots, goggles,gloves,long pants and long sleeved shirt to prevent against cuts

    • Do NOT drive on paved roads

    • Do NOT permit children to drive or ride adults ATV'S

    • Don't drive a ATV with a passenger or be a passenger

    • Without using a helmet or other protective gear while riding a ATV you will be more at risk to get injured

    • Most ATV injuries are head injuries so wearing a helmet will portent the injury

    • 1/3 of children are involved in ATV accidents

    • Between 2001 and 2007, the number of annual serious injuries treated by emergency medical professionals rose 37 percent.

    • Helmets have been known to reduce the risk of fatalities in ATV accidents by 42 percent. They have also been known to reduce the possibility of a non-fatal head injury by 64 percent


Children injury prevention

1. Riders should receive proper instruction from an experienced operator or professional trainer before attempting to operate the vehicle alone. Parents should closely supervise children while they are using the vehicle.



2. Children should never operate ATVs designed for adult use,those with engines having more than 90 cubic centimeters of displacement.


3. Passengers should never be carried on vehicles intended for one person.


4. Risk-taking behavior, such as jumping over ground depressions, dodging other vehicles, and speeding should be forbidden.


5. Alcohol and other drugs should never be used before operating a motorized vehicle.


6. Protective clothing should always be worn. This should include a helmet and goggles. Riders should not wear scarves or other clothing that might get caught in machinery.


7. ATVs should only be ridden during daylight hours.


8. Parents should be familiar with the areas where their children will ride and should know where the vehicle is being operated at all times.

15. Nearly every youth ATV sold in the US is made in Taiwan or China regardless of brand name.

Driving an ATV comes with big responsiblites to preventing an injury. If you wear the proper gear and have the proper experience you will prevent any injury from happening! Parents need to be extra cautious with their children because more than half of atv injures are from children under the age of 16.
