Attendance Reminders

Our goal is for all students to attend school every day. Teachers cannot instruct or assess students who are not attending classes. As you make plans to travel over the holidays or at anytime during the year, please remember that regular attendance is required. Absences due to vacations are not excused even if you notify the teacher or school in advance. If your students are ill, please provide a note from your child's doctor to excuse the absence within 48 hours. Absences, both excused and unexcused, can negatively affect grades and also count toward the mandatory attendance rules.

Safety Tip of the Week - Reminder

  • Please remember to keep all cross walks clear, avoid stopping your vehicle within a crosswalk. This allows our students and staff to cross safely.
  • If you are not planning to park and walk your child in to the building, please use the car-rider line. Avoid dropping your child(ren) off on the side of the street.

Hour of Code - from Lisa Costello, Instructional Technology Specialist

We live in a world surrounded by technology. And we know that whatever field our students choose to go into as adults, their ability to succeed will increasingly depend on understanding how technology works.

That’s why Caraway is joining in on the largest learning event in history: The Hour of Code, during Computer Science Education Week (December 4-10). More than 100 million students worldwide have already tried an Hour of Code. We will stretch our Hour of Code activities over the next three weeks.

Our Hour of Code is making a statement that Caraway is ready to teach these foundational 21st-century skills. To continue bringing programming activities to your students, we want to make our Hour of Code event huge. I encourage you to volunteer, reach out to local media, share the news on social media channels and consider hosting additional Hour of Code events in the community.

Here is a link to a document that our ITS, Lisa Costello, has created. It has many Hour of Code resources that you and your children can do at home.

See http://hourofcode.com/us for details, and help spread the word.

Reflections

We are proud of all of our students who participated in our Reflections program this year. Our students continue to amaze us with a vast amount of talent!

Chess Puzzle Competition Reminder

The Caraway Chess Club is holding the Caraway Chess Puzzle Competition on Monday, December 4, at 6:30pm in room 107 (Innovation Lab). As in past years, we would like to invite all students who are interested, not just those who are members of thechess club. The only prerequisite is that students are familiar with chess puzzles and chess notation. The best student in each grade (K-5) will be honored as grade-level winner. In addition, the top three (3) students each from 2nd through 5th grade will qualify to participate in the UIL A+ Chess Puzzle Competition in January. For questions, send an e-mail to chess club co-chair Nico Schüler at nico.schuler@txstate.edu.

Safe Routes to School Community Talk

Prior to the break we conducted a Walk Audit with consultants from the City of Austin. They gathered a lot of great information and were impressed with the amount of involvement at our school. Since the walk audit was meant for school personnel to express the concerns, a Community Open House at Murchison Middle School next week to gather input from community members and parents who might have not had an opportunity to voice their concerns in the past. Please see flyer below for more information.
