November 2020

A Note from Dr. Reynolds

WBE Families,

October was a busy month, filled with growing gardens, adding new STEM and technology, as well as giving back to our community. Thank you to everyone who donated items for Burrus Gives Back and also for supporting our school through our popcorn and cookie dough fundraiser. We know this year has looked a little different, but we are working to maintain a normal school environment while your child is in school. They have adjusted to all the changes amazingly. We appreciate your continued support and patience as we all work to provide the best possible learning environment while adhering to the guidelines provided to us. As we enter cold and flu season, please remind your child to wash their hands often and cover their mouths when coughing and sneezing. We will work with them while here to try and keep everyone healthy and happy.

Thank you,

Dr. Reynolds

You do have the option to shop online.

The link below will take you to our school’s Book Fair homepage. From here, you can access the online Scholastic Store. All items bought online will be shipped to your home. The day your student will come to the Book Fair will also be on our homepage. Students who are scheduled to come on November 3rd have been rescheduled since there is no school for Election Day. Teacher Highlight

Molly Wear, one of our fantastic Sumner Virtual Academy teachers, led a professional development for teachers this week. She went over all things Google Classroom and Virtual Learning. She is an asset to our faculty and our students. Way to go Ms. Wear. We can't wait to put this new learning into action.

STEM Update

School-Wide Halloween Themed STEM Challenges

Today was our school-wide STEM day. Each grade level completed a Halloween themed challenge and used their 21st century skills to create exciting projects. Below is an example of 3rd grades challenge. They designed and created a device to allow them to trick or treat while maintaining social distance.

Virtual Sandbox

We are so excited to add the Virtual Sandbox to our school. Our students now have the opportunity to learn how the Earth's topographical layers work in a fun, interactive way. Our 2nd and 4th grade classes have already had a turn and they loved it!

Growing Team

Our Hydroponic Gardens are growing like crazy. Our students were able to harvest and try the different lettuces and herbs. They even made a salad bar for the teachers. Our next project will be to grow strawberries and various types of mint. We will be growing pizza gardens in the Spring.
