What is a Mammogram?

A mammogram is a screening or a diagnostic to check for breast cancer. It is done by taking an x-ray of the breast. It can be done just because you want to, or if symptoms of breast cancer have occurred.

Details

-Women 40-70 should screen mammograms

-Screening mammograms should be pretty often (Once every 1-2 years)

-If you have a higher risk over breast cancer (whether it be genetically or DNA mutations are known) should speak with health care providers about screening for mammograms before the age of 40

Benefits

-Screening mammograms can detect breast cancer before it starts, letting treatment start earlier and possibly keep it from spreading

-Screening for mammograms has also reduced the amount breast cancer deaths

-It could possibly save your life

Pap Smears

What is Pap Smears?

Pap smears is a test that checks for cervical cancer. It is done by checking a women's' cervix for abnormal cell changes. It is often done when symptoms are showing.

Details

-Women from 21-65 should receive Pap Smears tests

-21-29 year olds should receive this test every 3 years (depending on symptoms and genetically info.)

-30-65 year olds should receive this test every 3-5 years (depending on symptoms and genetically info.)

-65 years and above should ask a health care provider

What do you do?

-Don't use tampons
-Don't use vaginal creams, suppositories, or medicines
-Don't use vaginal deodorant sprays or powders
-Don't have sex
-Don't douche

Benefits

-Receiving a pap smear exam can find abnormal cervical cells before they can become cancerous

-It will also have a better chance of curing the cancerous cells before it gets dangerous

-It could possibly save your life

Prostate Exams

What is a Prostate Exam?

Prostate cancer is the 2nd leading cause of death for men. It is to test if someone has prostate cancer. IF there are problems a biopsy should be taken. It is a tumor in the prostate (where components of semen are produces). It is done by a blood test called PSA blood test.

-49 and below should ask doctor about screening exams

-Men 50 and above should receive a prostate exam every year or so

-Anyone 21 and above should receive a prostate exam every 3-4 years

-70 and above should ask doctor about continuation of exams

-Prostate exams can reveal prostate problems

-It can reveal problems so biopsies can be taken before problems get serious

-It can increase the chance of curing the cancer
