The Goddess of Love

Aphrodite: The Goddess of Love

Aphrodite is the Greek goddess of love. She had other Greek names besides Aphrodite. She was also called Acidalia, Cytherea, and Cerigo. There are three different stories of Aphrodite's birth. In one of them, she arose from the sea. In another one, she was born as the daughter of Zeus and Dione. In the last one, she was born near the island of Cythera. One of her names "Cytherea" comes from the island she was born at. She was a very beautiful and charming goddess. Sometimes, her beauty was even seen as a threat to the other gods. They feared that their rivalry over her could lead to war, so Zeus married her to the ugly and putrid Hephaestus. After their marriage, she was no longer seen as a threat to the other gods because of how ugly her husband was. Even after she was married she still loved some other gods such as Ares, Anchises, Adonis, Hermes, and Poseidon. Aphrodite was a contestant in the Judgement of Paris. The Trojan prince was asked to choose the most beautiful goddess. The other contestants were Athena and Hera. The prince chose Aphrodite because of how beautiful she was.
