Third Grade Year, Transition Year

This year will be bring many changes for your child. Each student will be graded individually based on the work that they produce in and out of the classroom. Letter grades are given for the five subjects: Math, Reading, Language Arts, Science and Social Studies. The district wide focus this year will be on Literacy. Your child will be asked to read nightly and may also have assignments that involve your input. For further information about the Literacy focus, please visit the following district site at http://www.rss.k12.nc.us.

Read To Achieve

Last year, the State of North Carolina enacted the Read To Achieve law. Beginning in the Third Grade year, students are required to meet proficiency in Reading in order to be promoted to the Fourth Grade at the end of the year. Students will be required to take assessments on twelve preselected standards of Reading. If a student does not meet any of the criteria for proficiency, then they will attend Summer Camp in order to move forward.
