Third Grade Year, Transition Year
This year will be bring many changes for your child. Each student will be graded individually based on the work that they produce in and out of the classroom. Letter grades are given for the five subjects: Math, Reading, Language Arts, Science and Social Studies. The district wide focus this year will be on Literacy. Your child will be asked to read nightly and may also have assignments that involve your input. Math
Math will focus on place value, numeration, multiplication, division, geometry and fractions.
Reading
Reading will focus on the five components of Reading such as Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Fluency, Vocabulary, and Comprehension.
Language Arts
Language Arts will focus on parts of speech, sentences, vocabulary words, prefixes/suffixes/roots.
Read To Achieve
Last year, the State of North Carolina enacted the Read To Achieve law. Beginning in the Third Grade year, students are required to meet proficiency in Reading in order to be promoted to the Fourth Grade at the end of the year. Students will be required to take assessments on twelve preselected standards of Reading. If a student does not meet any of the criteria for proficiency, then they will attend Summer Camp in order to move forward.
