"American Pie" is rumored to be the name of the plane that crashed with Buddy Holly in it.
..."This will be the day that I die, this will be the day that I die."
Buddy Holly's song "That'll be the day" is referenced in the chorus.
"And the moss grew fat on a rolling stone"
Bob Dylan wrote "Like A Rolling Stone" in 1965 and it was his first major change in folk music.
"And a voice from you and me"
This is referring to Bob Dylan playing "Blowin' in the Wind," but doesn't have the best singing voice.
"Oh and while the king was looking down"
Bob Dylan was constantly changing music style, making him very popular, while others stuck to folk music.
"The jester stole his thorny crown"
While Elvis was in the Army, Bob Dylan basically took over his place in the music industry.
"The courtroom was adjourned, no verdict was returned"
Lee Harvey Oswald was never convicted of the Kennedy assassination because he was murdered.
"And while Lenon read a book of Marx"
John Lennon said Rock n' Roll was becoming just as famous as Christianity, which led to Anti-Beatles burnings.
"The quartet practiced in the park"
There were 4 Beatles, making them a quartet, and they held their last concert in Candlestick Park, which they said was just a practice.
"And we sang dirges in the dark, the day the music died"
The dirges (funeral songs) were for the Kennedy's and Martin Luther King, being they both died in the mid 60's.
