Information about Union Springs High School

October 21, 2022

A note from Mr. Dentel

This week was very busy with the sectional games, senior nights, and the remaining trips to Orenda Springs. In addition, our first marking period grades were mailed home, and although the number of students failing courses is low, we continue to look for interventions for students struggling. If you are concerned about your student's progress, please reach out to their counselor for support. Also, please encourage your student to utilize the extra support from 2:20 - 3:00 every Monday thru Thursday. During this time, our staff work with students on their homework, test preparation, test corrections, and review of missed work. Some of our students treat after school as a reactive intervention to attend after they struggle. Students who see after school proactively feel more confident in classes and come home with less homework.

My 15-year-old daughter and I had a conversation about the different "challenges" that exist on Social Media. Some of these challenges are harmless, but each year we see challenges that are dangerous to students' physical safety or negatively impact the school's culture. We continue to educate our students on the impact of Social Media and ask families to reinforce these ideals. It is nearly impossible to get in front of all the trends out there, but if we teach our students about online safety and the belief that "other people matter", our students will be able to make better choices.

In this newsletter, we are spotlighting some student accomplishments, starting to introduce our new staff, and giving vital information to senior parents. As the "Wolfpack News" grows, I want to ensure families get the information they need. Please reach out to me if you have any concerns.

SENIOR PARENTS!!!

We will try to give the important information that senior parents need to know.

We have some information regarding our senior trip. It will take place June 2nd and 3rd at Cedar Point in Sandusky, OH. This was the location voted on by the class of 2023.

The first installment for the senior trip to Cedar Point:

  • $50 and is due December 2, 2022.

  • Checks are preferable and should be made out to USCSD. In the memo line put class 2023 trip.

  • All payments need to be given to Mr. Palmiotto.

  • This is a nonrefundable payment.

  • This payment is to secure your place and is also used to finalize numbers for making hotel and ticket reservations.

The Middle School Band and Chorus concert will be on Monday, December 19th at 7:00.

Meet one of our New Staff Members - Mrs. Deroose

Over the next few issues we will introduce you to some of our new staff. First up is Mrs. Deroose.

What is it you will be doing at Union Springs?

School Attendance Teacher

Why did you choose Union Springs?

I was told it was a great district to work for and I am happy to be here.

What are you excited about for this coming school year?

I am excited to engage with students and staff. I am also excited to build a new program since this is a new position.

What other things would you like our High School families to know about you?

I am here to support families with attendance issues as they navigate and attempt to overcome barriers such as mental health.

Visiting College reps

We continue to bring college reps in to meet our students. As we set up more colleges, we will post for our students.

ORENDA SPRINGS

This week the 10th, 11th, and 12th-grade classes went to Orenda Springs. Again, teamwork, courage, common sense, and FUN were in full force. Students had the opportunity to soar to new heights while their classmates encouraged them verbally and physically. Some of our staff even braved the activities. The trip's goal was to continue building the grade levels' cohesiveness. MISSION ACCOMPLISHED! The feedback from students, staff, and parents has been overwhelmingly positive. Some comments were:

" I want to come back here as a family trip."

"Next year, when we go, I will go higher up."

"I talked to students I did not know very well in my class."

Trips like this take a lot of work behind the scenes. We want to thank the Board of Education, the administration team, and Mrs. Matzen for coordinating all the coverage, our staff, the bus garage, and drivers. Without their hard work and dedication, trips like this could not happen.
