Back to School Update
From the Principal's Desk
September 11, 2020
Dear Masconomet Middle School Families,
Thank you for your patience and support during the last several weeks as we navigate these uncharted waters of returning to school in the remote learning plan. While the school year carries with it many challenges, I know that our faculty and staff are excited and energized to begin. They have participated in a variety of professional development including digital learning, social emotional learning, and many others. They have also met frequently with their departments and teams to plan for the start of the school year.
For your own planning purposes and in an effort to provide you with important information, please take note of the following information:
School begins on Monday, September 21 in the remote learning phase. Please see the remote learning schedule here. It is also posted under “About our School” on the website.
The teachers, department heads and I developed a set of Remote Learning Expectations for middle school students. Please see those here
As mentioned in my previous email this week, materials pick up will take place on Thursday, September 17 for 7th grade and Friday, September 18 for 8th grade. Please see the letter here.
The 7th grade orientation will be posted to the website as a video for students on Wednesday, September 16. It will include a welcome by guidance counselors, Assistant Principal Mr. Monagle, and myself as well as information for logging into Blackboard, Powerschool and student email accounts. The video will also cover other various topics important to 7th graders.
An 8th grade welcome back video will also be posted next week with a few important reminders and information
We have posted a Frequently Asked Questions Page on the website with many of the questions we have received during the last few weeks. Please see that here.
We will be hosting two back to school virtual assemblies during the first week of school. The first one will occur for 7th grade on Wednesday, September 23 during period 8 and the second will occur for 8th grade on Friday, September 25 during period 8.
Announcements will be posted to Blackboard by the first day of school and teachers will also remind students to join those presentations.
I am excited for the 2020-2021 school year as we draw closer to the official start with students. I look forward to working with the community, and I look forward to our collective work together to support and educate our students during an unusual and difficult time. Our teachers and support staff are eager to begin and meet their new students, as am I. As always, please reach out to me if you have any additional questions.
On this 19th anniversary of the attacks of September 11, 2001, the following comes from the High School Principal, Peter Delani: “On September 8, Masco [High School] Student Council members joined local firefighters, State Representatives, fellow students and the Courtemanche family in leading a flag planting. 3,000 flags were placed on Masco’s front lawn to honor and remember the heroes and first-responders who lost their lives on 9/11 [with] each flag representing a lost life.”
Take care and have a good weekend,
Philip B. McManus, Ed.D.
