What's Due in Oklahoma Schools?
October 2023: For Oklahoma School Administrators
Deadline Dread and Pumpkin Spice
Deadline Dread and Pumpkin Spice
We considered the Milestone Mirage last month – the illusion that reaching the next milestone will somehow make our lives perfect – but this month we will consider the opposite phenomenon: Deadline Dread.
Deadline Dread is a very specific type of worry that arrives each year for school administrators about the same time as Pumpkin Spice. We focus so much on the reporting season that Deadline Dread can overwhelm us and sap our people of energy. We might not be able to avoid Pumpkin Spice, but here are a few ideas to minimize Deadline Dread this time of year:
- · Celebrate with Pumpkin Spice every time you meet a deadline, even the small ones.
- · Everyone else in your organization is stressed this time of year. Let them know you are stressed, too.
- · Remind each other that Deadline Dread and Pumpkin Spice happen every year, but everything still gets done!
- · The process, people, and preparation you have in place work, so trust in them.
- · No single person can make this all work, so no one person can carry all the worry.
- · Many of these reports and applications will be last-minute, due to factors beyond anyone’s control. Add Pumpkin Spice.
- · Call some experienced administrators; they know all the tricks!
- · Our words either raise or lower stress levels. Pumpkin Spice breath always helps.
- · So far, God has gotten you through everything. Why would this be different?
- · Three beautiful things ahead: Fall Break, Thanksgiving Break, and Christmas Break!
Stress is different than worry, and sometimes worry is hard to control when you carry so many burdens. Don’t dread those deadlines, just line them up and knock them down. Just like last year, it will all fall into place, eventually.
Deadline Dread can be reduced this time of year by deliberate leaders and a little Pumpkin Spice, so face it all with courage. Embrace the season!
