Learning about Land forms in 2nd Grade and in Art!
The 2nd graders kicked off their IB Unit, How the World Works, by creating a wondering wall about land forms, states of matter, natural resources, and bodies of water. Their inquiry was about how bodies of water form, how land forms evolve and change, identifying natural resources, and how states of matter change. Teachers embedded their current science unit: Earth’s Land and Water, as well as reading, writing, communication, and research skills.
The key concepts for this unit were form, responsibility, and change. Students explored what states of matter, land forms, and bodies of water were like. They read and wrote about the Great Lakes, compared bodies of water, and land forms. Students inquired how the Great Lakes were formed by glaciers melting and how different land forms changed with time. Finally, they explored responsibility. Much was learned about conservation of water and also pollution! Students discussed ways to protect natural resources so that they are around for many years to come! The Learner Profile Traits that were highlighted were: thinkers, open minded, and balanced.
Mrs. Paster and Mrs. Perez also collaborated with art teacher, Mrs. Youtsey, and librarian, Mrs. Van Staveren. The 2nd grade students created land forms during art and had to use their knowledge of land forms to create their projects. Landscapes were produced using oil pastels and blending in the colors. Mrs. Van Staveren helped with the research by identifying all the resources in the library about the Great Lakes.
This unit of inquiry has inspired several students to seek more information about the world around us. One student wanted to visit the Great Lakes and was able to do this over the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. Many students have shared their knowledge and experience from class with their families and have furthered their research on their own!
