A Message from the Director
TVA Families,
One of the missing pieces in virtual learning is the opportunity for students to be read to and to read aloud. Research shows that as readers we hear and internal voice in our head that is reading to us based on a myraid of fluent readers we have had exposure to in our lives. Often this is a parent or care giver, frequently it is a teacher, and over time it becomes the persons own internal voice.
As a virtual students we do not have the frequency of these opportunities. Students are often reading on their own and there is no modeling taking place. We are going to encourage you to work to change that. Here are some key things to push your child in this area.
1. Read a Book - Make sure they are reading something outside of what is expected for school. Make trips to the local library, look for books in neighborhood lending libraries, or buy some. They need to read on their own outside of school.
2. Read to Them - I can hear it now, "My child is 15 I am not going to read to a grown kid." Ya know what happens at adult book clubs? They read to each other. Share a book. Discuss a book. Look for magazines and other quick reading items to read to each other. They need to hear you reading to remember what good reading sounds like.
3. Audio Books - You can rent audio books from the library or buy them everywhere. Several apps also have audio books. If you don't have time to read together encourage them to hear someone else reading. If you can listen to an audio book while reading it. This builds strong readership.
4. Reading Classwork - Within the Edmentum system there is the ability for the system to read the text to the student. Encourage them to do this. This education based reinforcement of a different kind of reading is built into what they are doing each day.
5. 15 Minutes - They say that reading to your child for 15 minutes a day is a greater indicator of future success than anything else you do. It takes so little to share and connect with your child to make a lifetime of impact.
Reading is what sets us apart as humans. The transmission of knowledge through printed text. We encourage you to reflect on your reading practices and be intentional with your choices. We build successful students one page at a time.
Sincerely,
Mr. Kevin Zeck & the TVA Staff
Each week we will showcase TVA Students of the Week. Students are chosen based on their online performance with staying on pace and making good academic progress. We are excited to celebrate our student successes and we hope this helps you also connect in some ways as well.

Tech Alert
Several of our high school students have expressed concerns with alerts or being unable to log in to their school issued device. A new security feature was rolled out recently that depending on your device usage may cause some problems. Here is the solution:
- Make sure you're signed out of everything.
- When you sign back in make sure you are only using your Duneland logins. New security has been installed so that students are no longer allowed to use any personal logins.
- Open Microsoft Edge (that's it, you don't have to log in or anything).
- Leave your device on so that it can sync.
