Cyberbullying
Parent Tips for Protecting Children
Discuss cyberbullying with your child and ask if he or she has ever experienced it or seen it happen to someone.
•Model technology use for your child – teach how to use responsibly.
•Monitor your child’s digital technology use and accounts. Be on the lookout for behaviors like quickly switching screens and having multiple passwords and accounts.
•Don’t assume that a normally well-behaved child is guilt-free. The faceless digital world makes it easy for even good kids to sometimes be mean.
•Pay attention to how your child is acting – not all children will let you know there’s a problem.
•Let the school guidance counselor know.
•Reinforce child not sharing passwords with friends.
•Teach your child to come forward if he or she knows a friend is bullying others or being bullied. Being a bystander helps perpetuate the cycle and continue someone else’s pain.
•Tell your child that you won't blame him or her for being a victim of cyberbullying. Emphasize that you won't take away technology privileges - this is the main reason kids don't tell adults when they are cyberbullied.
•Keep track of your child’s reputation – Google alerts, etc.
•Block or filter incoming messages.
•Change your child’s Internet address or phone number if you have to.
•Contact the Service Provider.
•Keep records of all cyberbullying in case you have to contact law enforcement officials.
