Sunnyland Elementary
"The Scoop"
A Note from the Principal
Greetings Sunnyland families,
As we head into spring, we have a lot of exciting things coming our way. One of those is the start of construction for our new school. We are on track to open fall of 2022! In preparation for groundbreaking, we are moving four of our portables from their current location to the north end of our school on E. Illinois. One of the impacts of that move will be a reduction in parking spaces on E. Illinois. Additionally, once construction is under way we will have added traffic to and from Sunnyland with construction deliveries, etc.
I’m sure you all recognize the level of congestion that we have, especially on King St, during drop off and pick up. With construction beginning we can expect the congestion to increase. As that happens, I ask that we all please be extra aware of our Sunnyland neighbors. They need to be able to enter and exit their driveways at any time of day. Thank you for not parking on King Street. If you are in the driving lane on King St, as you progress forward please watch and wait, and do not block any driveways. If there is a parked car, instead of pulling along side the car, wait until the line has moved far enough forward for you to drive around the car. Last week our bus was stuck and unable to reach Sunnyland because King St was blocked with family traffic.
I know that many of you are already doing all of these things, and if a driveway does get blocked, I assume that it is an accident – we are all human! I appreciate the extra level of awareness and consideration for our neighbors and for each other during these times.
Thank you.
Warmly,
Amy
Kindergarten registration is open for fall 2021
Registration for kindergarten has begun in Bellingham Public Schools. All children who will be 5 before Sept. 1, 2021 can be registered for kindergarten. Families can register their kindergartner online through the link on our kindergarten webpage. Registering now helps us hire staff, balance our classes, connect with families and ready our schools to welcome our kindergartners.
All children who are currently enrolled in Promise K will automatically be enrolled in kindergarten for the fall and do not need to re-register.
We plan to start in-person learning at every elementary school this fall with strong safety protocols in place. We will be ready to support our early learners and welcome the class of 2034 to our schools.
Kindergarten open house videos and virtual tours will be posted on school websites and sent to registered kindergarten families in May.
To find out more about attendance areas, registration and childhood immunization schedules, please visit bellinghamschools.org/kindergarten or contact our elementary schools directly. And thanks in advance for letting a friend or neighbor with a future kindergartner know the registration window is open and ready for them!

Promise Tomorrow Initiative-Quarter 4Do you know a student who likes thinking about cool inventions, technology, and ways to make the world a better place?
The Promise Tomorrow Initiative is a great opportunity for motivated students to engage in student-driven inquiry! This is project-based learning at its best. Students will research complex topics, then innovate technologies, designs, or plans to mobilize behavior.
Student teams will meet weekly via Zoom, be supported by a volunteer, and be supervised by a Promise Tomorrow Coordinator. Projects will be presented quarterly with a final symposium in June.
Quarter 4 registration is open now and closes on March 22.
Those interested, please see detailed information on the district website. Or go straight to the SIGN UP to register.
Questions about the project can be directed to the project administrative team, by level: Margi Smith (Elementary) margi.smith@bellinghamschools.org, Eva Chazo (Mid—level) eva.warnerchazo@bellinghamschools.org, or Erin Burke (High School) erin.burke@bellinghamschools.org | First Grade Math CirclesBFPP math club coordinator and parent Rachel Blum will be presenting a series of six 45-minute math circle sessions for 1st gradersbased on the book Bright, Brave, Open Minds by Julia Brodsky. Students wishing to participate will be asked to attend each session.
The sessions will be held Wednesdays from 12:45-1:30 via zoom on 3/24, 3/31, 4/14, 4/21, and 4/28, 5/5 hosted by Rachel Blum.
