Year 5 Weekly Update
Friday 13th February 2015
Week 23
This week we have enjoyed our Chinese New Year celebrations which have included a flower market in the hall on Tuesday, where children got to buy an assortment of New Year decorations. The children worked extremely hard rehearsing for the Chinese New Year assembly and they did a fantastic job on Thursday to the parents and today to the rest of the school. We also enjoyed our rotations of Chinese themed activities to finish up the week!
We wish everybody a safe and enjoyable break and a prosperous New Year of the Goat!
Golden book

UOI - Big Business
First off, we would like to say a big thank you to all the parents who helped out on our research trip this week to Prince Edward to explore and observe marketplaces. We were also lucky enough to have our guest speaker, Mrs Khan (Delna's mum) present to the children about Food & Beverage marketing and product information.
This week we looked at companies with a social mission (e.g. Better World Books, One World Play Project) and considered that if we all worked together when planning and carrying out our market day, we could maximize our opportunities for raising money and helping those in need. The children formed their business groups and began developing product ideas for our market day.
Maths
This week will looked more into Data Handling; how it is linked into our unit of inquiry and how we use it to collect and interpret information that may influence our product development. When we return after the Chinese New Year holidays the children will be creating surveys to send to the rest of the school.
Homework this week
This week's homework:
Now the children know their Big Business groups, we would like them to collaborate over the Chinese New Year holidays on a Google Doc to brainstorm product categories and ideas. Please consider the following:
1. Creative Product ideas
2. Creative Services you could offer at our marketplace
3. Create a sales pitch for why your group should sell within a certain category (e.g. Food, toys etc)? Why should your group sell brownies, for example, over another? What makes your product/service unique?
The first person in each group should create and share the Google doc with the others in the group. Please also share this with your teacher.
