IN THE KNOW!
IMPORTANT MESSAGE TO FAMILIES
Dear Northshore Families:
We hope that you and your family were able to relax and enjoy the holiday break. In Northshore we have a lot to be thankful for during this season of gratitude and reflection. After multiple years of disruption, it has been wonderful to return to more normal school operations.
While we have a lot to celebrate, one area of growing concern is our students’ ability to appropriately and safely resolve conflict. In the past few weeks, across the nation and in our region, we have witnessed an increase in threats of gun violence or acts of violence associated with schools. This is very concerning, and we are doing everything we can to support our students and school communities.
While the District has distributed information about the serious nature of these incidents, and we require families to sign the Weapons Letter Acknowledgement Form (found under Gun Safety on the district website), this information does not seem to be reaching all of our students. So, we need to try a different approach. After consulting with school leaders, counselors, educators, and our labor partners, we are recommending a consistent message is delivered by trusted adults at each school. This is in addition to continuing to encourage families to talk with their students at home. This school-based messaging will begin on Friday, December 2.
How each school shares the message may look different, in response to the unique needs of individual school communities. The student message may be shared in a newsletter, school assembly, classrooms, advisory, or via video. Some schools may choose to phase communication, so timing will also be different across schools.
While the communication approach will be different, our schools’ goal is the same - to be explicit about the District’s expectations regarding threats of violence and or gun violence, the serious nature of these incidents, consequences, and how to report a concern. Our hope is that by addressing these topics directly with students, we will reduce the number of incidents our school communities are experiencing.
Schools have been provided with common messaging to share with 4th-12th grade students through a variety of channels. Staff will not share the message with preschool through 3rd grade students. You may review the common messaging by grade level below:
What can you do at home to help?
Please continue to have conversations with your children about these types of comments or threats. If a student is talking or posting about harming either a person or the school, using weapons or any other violent threats, it can lead to serious consequences. We must take all threats seriously and the District response will involve law enforcement. Just like at airports, schools must be places where weapons are not joked about, discussed, or brought.
If you or your student hears or sees something concerning, say something. We must all remain vigilant in the protection of our school communities. Northshore schools are overwhelmingly very safe places. One of the reasons is because students are often the eyes and ears of the school community and can help identify a potential issue before it happens. If at any time you or your student believe you have knowledge of a situation where danger is imminent, dial 911 immediately. Please continue to encourage your student to share any concerns with a trusted staff member. If they aren’t comfortable sharing directly with staff, concerns can always be anonymously submitted using our Safe Schools Alert System:
Call - 885-521-2665
Text - 885-521-2665
Email - 1414@alert1.us
Website - 1414.alert1.us
Please review the District’s Rights and Responsibilities Handbook and as appropriate share key information with your student.
Help reduce student access to firearms. We all play a role in keeping our children safe by storing firearms locked, unloaded, and separate from ammunition. Visit King County Lock It Up for more information on safe storage. It’s important to ask about the presence of unsecured guns in any home your child visits. Make it part of your general safety conversation along with questions about pets, video games, adult supervision, etc. Visit Be SMART for Kids for more tips on how to approach this conversation.
For more information about Northshore’s proactive approach to school safety, please read Interim Superintendent Michael Tolley’s November 9 message.
We also know that conversations about school violence will result in a variety of emotions for students and families. Here are some resources you may find helpful:
Thank you for your continued support and partnership in these efforts. Together, we can provide all of our students the safe and supportive learning environment they need and deserve.

Attendance
Attendance Line + Email
When your child will be absent or tardy, please email ccattendance@nsd.org and CC your student’s teacher OR leave a message on our 24-hour phone line at 425-408-5710 by 9:50am. If the absence is reported after 9:50am, you may receive an automated call.
If you are concerned that your student's absences have not been updated, please email ccattendance@nsd.org requesting confirmation.
Prearranged/Extended Absences
In the event that your child will miss more than two consecutive school days for a reason other than health or medical issues, complete and submit the Pre-Approved Absence Request Google Form at least one week before the first planned day of absence. Access the form here!
Student Drop-Off
Students should be dropped off no earlier than 9:00am when campus supervision begins and picked up no later than 3:45pm at the end of the day.
Early Pick-Up
If your child will be leaving early for the day, families/guardians will need to send a note, email both the teacher and ccattendance@nsd.org, or call the office on the main line at 425-408-5700. Please do not leave a message on the attendance line. Please avoid picking up during their scheduled lunch, recess or specialist time. It can be especially difficult to find students on the playground and in the cafeteria.
Only an authorized person may take a child from school. Any student being dismissed prior to the regular dismissal time must be met in the office, where the student must be signed out by the parent/guardian or authorized person. Families are not permitted to walk directly to classrooms.
Change in After School Plan
If there is a change in your child’s after school plan or how they will be getting home, parents/guardians must send a note or email your student’s teacher and ccattendance@nsd.org before school starts. If a change is needed after the start of school, please call our main office line at 425-408-5700 to ensure that we get the message to your student and their teacher in time for dismissal. Please do not leave a message on the attendance line.
We appreciate your cooperation and adherence to these procedures. It is all for the safety of our students and families.
Drop Off/Pick Up
Please be sure your student is at Canyon Creek at 9am and you are here to pick them up by 3:45pm. We realize traffic is intense, however, waiting until 3:55pm to come to campus is not a sustainable solution. If you do not pick up your child by 3:55pm, they will be taken to the office to wait for you. This will mean you will need to park and come in to sign them out. Please do your very best to get here on time in order to avoid having to park and come onto campus.
Safety Reminder:
We ask parents to please do your part! While our students are busy making sure crosswalks are safe, we need everyone to do the same in drop off and pick up areas around our schools. Many of our schools are located in busy neighborhoods. This may result in traffic congestion. Please obey traffic rules, be courteous of neighbors, do not park illegally, and stay alert for young people walking to and from school. If school busing is available in your neighborhood, please consider sending your student to and from school on the bus to reduce congestion.
Here are a few reminders to ensure we can safely get students to and from school:
DO NOT drop students off in the bus loop (staff parking lot).
If you are a walker, please do NOT use the crosswalk in front of the entrance to Canyon Creek/Skyview on 35th. People who use the crosswalk stop traffic from leaving or entering our campus, creating a massive car pile up.
If you are a walker from the North side of CC, use the entrance near the 3rd grade portables.
If you are a walker from the East/South side of CC, use the walkway through the baseball field at Canyon Creek and the crosswalk near the gate entrance of Skyview.
If your student can ride the bus, please have them use this form of transportation to get to CC.
If you are a walker and it rains, continue to walk to school. If walkers decide to drive to school due to weather, the back-up for drop-off and pick-up will more than double.
Do not drop your student off in the parking lot and have them walk alone.
Volunteers
All volunteers in the Northshore School District are required to complete a volunteer application and background check online. Volunteers will need to complete the application once a year.
Volunteers can learn more and complete an online application here.
Lost and Found
Please remember to print your child’s name in their lunch box, jackets, coats, and sweatshirts. We will return lost items to students if their names are in them.
Students can look for their lost items on the hooks in the hallways between the gym/cafeteria and restroom hallways. Any items remaining on the last day of school before winter and summer breaks will be donated.
