News and Notes

  • Tuesday, March 2nd: Earthcapades Virtual Water Assembly. Sponsored for us by the City of Hillsboro. K-3 is at 1 pm (login into class google meets); 4-6 is at 2 pm (login into class Google meets). This is a LIVE assembly with jugglers and participation with the presenters. It is about 45 minutes long. Join if you can!!
  • Kindergarten registration for 2021-2022 begins on Monday, March 1st. Registration for all grade levels begins on this day. An Orenco specific Kindergarten site will be shared in a few weeks for more information about Kindergarten.
  • Meal distribution changes begin March 1-March 19. Many pick-up times will be different, so families are encouraged to review the walk zone and bus delivery stop lists (we are on page 18 for Orenco) for the schedule. See hsd.k12.or.us/nutrition for more information. On Mar. 29, meal delivery will cease. Students attending hybrid can pick up meals when they are on campus and students participating in CDL only can request weekly meals.
  • In preparation for hybrid learning, one adjustment we are making is having our Life Skills buses use the curb space along 71st Avenue for drop-off. The handicap parking spot will remain. The existing parking spaces along 71st Ave will be "no parking" during school hours. This has been approved by the City of Hillsboro.

Crystal Apple Award Nominations--open

Nominations can be made of any K-12 staff member - licensed, classified, or administrator - who you feel goes above and beyond to support students and promotes lifelong learning as a key to their future success. Learn more at www.hillsborochamberor.com/crystal-apple and submit nominations by Friday, Mar. 12.

Thank you to Robyn Bruun and Erin Stafford who led the Art Literacy night event on Friday, Feb 26th. We had 98 computer participants in the webinar and almost 300 people that signed up! The video can be seen here if you would like to watch the art lesson on your own time. This was the first time we tried a webinar and it worked really well, but I feel bad that we didn't get to see everyone's faces like in a meeting. (Pics below) Some people thought this made it nice, too!

March Justice Leader & Character Trait

Our college and career character trait this month is Growth Mindset. Students also learn about a notable person who displays this character trait. Orenco students will learn more about Rigoberto Menchú Tum. Rigoberta Menchú Tum was born on January 9, 1959 to a poor indigenous peasant family and raised in the Quiche branch of the Mayan culture, in the area of Guatemala. When she was a teenager, she became involved in social reform and fought for indigenous peoples’ and women’s rights. Rigoberta lost her family during her fight for justice. She was forced to go into hiding in Guatemala and then flee to Mexico. She won a Nobel Peace Prize in 1992 for her work in social justice and her efforts to protect the rights of Indigenous peoples.

Booster News

We are participating in a creative fundraiser with Art to Remember again this year that allows you to purchase keepsake products customized with your child's art. There are over 60 products and many are less than $15. These make great gifts and 25% of every purchase goes right back to our school. The exciting part is that you can select any piece of artwork from home! You can use art from this project, a piece from earlier in the year, or create something new. Just click on the link below, click the "upload" button, select a piece of artwork, search for your child's name, and start shopping. You can upload additional pieces and save them in a digital family gallery. Have fun creating and shopping! to turn your masterpieces into beautiful keepsakes. Free shipping when you select Ship to School before March 26th.

School Counselor "Remind" Code

Mrs. Hanson, our school counselor, has a Remind code for parents who are interested in receiving up-to-date resources. As soon as she hears about a community resource (food, mental health, housing, parenting classes...) she sends it along to parents. If you would like to receive these messages text b38dg3d to 81010. You can stop the messages at any time.

Absences and Attendance

Please contact your child's teacher or our school office if your child is ILL and will not be present for distance learning. This also applies for Family Illness (missing school due to a family illness). Phone messages are checked several times a day, 503-844-1370.

Email: bartolom@hsd.k12.or.us

Student attendance is marked daily as: Synchronous or Asynchronous or blank if we cannot verify attendance. District calls go out by 6 pm if your child's attendance is not verified.

Self-Serve Materials Pick-up

If you have an item to drop-off, there is a bin available each day from 12pm to 6 pm. Items can be dropped here like books, broken chromebooks, etc. It is helpful if you include a note with a name on it. We ask that if you have papers with identifying information, then call and we can arrange a pick-up with you.

Your teacher may have arranged a pick-up, too. Carts will roll out between 12 pm-6 pm daily if there are items to pick up. Walk to the South entrance--by the play structure and cafeteria entrance doors, not Birch Ave.

Free meals for all students

HSD is providing free meals to all students, Mondays through Fridays, when school is in session, through June 2021. Meals are being delivered via buses (Call transportation or check http://www.hsd.k12.or.us/mybus for stop locations and times). They are also available in a drive-through/walk-up between 11:45 am to 12:45 pm at six schools: Century High, Brown Middle, Evergreen Middle, Poynter Middle, South Meadows Middle, and Lincoln St Elementary. Any student or parent can go to any bus stop or hub location to get food.

  • If you are struggling to find a close meal stop, please don’t hesitate to reach out and call Transportation at 503-844-1123.

  • For families living in the “walk zone”, there are meal stops available to them. They do not need to walk out of their neighborhood or to the schools to pick up meals.
