Common Lit
ATTENTION ELA TEACHERS!!
So what is Common Lit? It is a FREE website full of fiction and non-fiction text for grades 5 - 12. It includes news articles, poems, short stories, and historical documents. Teachers create classes and assign text-dependent questions for the readings, and you get great data afterwards to monitor student learning. There are guiding questions, assessment questions, and discussion questions for each text. You can browse their library by theme, genre, literary devices, or standard. You can search by grade level or lexile level. Reading a novel? Use a paired text from Common Lit based on theme and help students to make rigorous analyses and connections. Provide students with the practice they need to build their literacy skills with this wonderful, free resource.
If that is not enough to get you excited about this resource - check this out: it also provides students with an interactive dictionary, the option for students to have words, phrases, or the entire text read aloud, and readings can be translated into Spanish. No devices? No problem? Readings can also be downloaded in PDF format if devices are not available.
