In "Otter" News - July Update
It's a Great Time to be an Otter!
Message from the Principal
I am excited to start my tenure as the Principal of the Oakville Elementary School Otters! I am all moved in and ready to get to work. The Summer School staff and I have already even welcomed students to our Summer School program! Over the course of the next several months, I am looking forward to learning the "Otter" way and working with the entire school community to begin to build strong relationships and develop a high level of trust. Most importantly, I cannot wait to meet and start learning with my new students, or as I will always refer to them, "my kids"!
I am a long-time resident of St. Mary's County. I am a graduate of Leonardtown High School and St. Mary's College of Maryland. I joined SMCPS in 2000 and earned a Master's Degree in Educational Leadership from Towson University in 2010. Before transitioning to become a school system administrator in 2012, I taught at Leonardtown High School, Hollywood Elementary School, Great Mills High School, Banneker Elementary School, and worked as part of the inaugural staff that opened Evergreen Elementary School in 2009. I left the classroom to become the Supervisor of Instruction for Fine Arts in 2012 where I oversaw the school system's programs in music, visual arts, and theatre for grades K-12. I have spent the past five years as the Assistant Principal and IEP Chairperson at Captain Walter Francis Duke Elementary School.
Through my experiences, I have learned the most important factor in ensuring student success in learning is developing a positive and nurturing environment for students, staff, and families. I am committed to creating a welcoming, safe, and caring environment for all who enter our doors. I am ALWAYS here to listen and work WITH you as a partner in your child's education. I believe in strong lines of communication and will use this SMORE format to communicate with you monthly during the summer and then weekly as the regular school year begins.
We are facing a unique school year where we will work to establish a sense of normalcy after a year and a half of constant change. My top priority will be to make sure students feel safe and cared for as they return to school five days a week so they are ready to learn and grow!
I welcome the opportunity to meet and talk with you over the next several months. I hope you and your children can join me on July 22nd at 5:00 pm on the school playground for a "Popsicles with the Principal" meet and greet opportunity. I also hope you take the opportunity to stop in and introduce yourself when you are in the building. Finally, I am always only a phone call or Google Meet/Zoom away. Enjoy your summer and find some time to relax and recharge!
Otterly Yours,
Ms. Dietz
