Essential Instructional Practices in Early Literacy: Grades K-3
A new, one-page document has been published that summarizes the 10 K-3 Essentials. While we know effective literacy instruction can't be boiled down to one page and accessing the full Essentials document is necessary, this summary document provides a great overview.
Ramp-Up Reading Engagement!
As you may know, Ramped-Up Read Aloud, along with most of its titles, are available for check-out at CEMaT. If you would like to start your own collection, we now have a price list that includes each book highlighted in this resource. The list shows the lowest Amazon price (as of January 2021) and a Scholastic price if available. Most of these books are priced for less than $15 in hardcover format. What a great way to ‘ramp-up’ reading engagement and motivation in your classroom!

Task Force is advocating for legislative support and funding for this work.
Task Force invited Dr. Jay Marks--Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Consultant at Oakland Schools--to help us begin learning and conversations related to equity, inclusion, and diversity.
Document review: Task Force voted on Feb. 1 to send Schoolwide draft to GELN for a first read & feedback; also started review of the 6-12 Disciplinary Literacy Essentials document for culturally sustaining practices. Both documents should be ready for 2021-2022 school year.
MICIP/MI Strategy Bank: Entries and resources in development.
ESSER Funds:
LEAs may use ESSER funds for summer school costs. If there are any specific questions regarding the use of the funds, please direct questions to Kevin Walters at waltersk5@michigan.gov.

Detroit Public Television’s “Michigan Learning Channel”
Detroit Public Television (DPTV) Stations are partnering with Michigan Educators to build a new statewide learning service called the “Michigan Learning Channel.” The Michigan Learning Channel network will deliver instructional content programming to students,
parents and teachers, using a wide variety of media platforms, including a system of dedicated broadcast channels. All programming is free, with the goal of being a resource for students, families, and teachers that can be accessed by ALL of Michigan regardless of internet access Math Mights is the Math resource, Colorado Classroom Series is programming for ELA (currently) with new content coming from Michigan (targeted for April). Plans are in place to allow the content to be easily integrated into an online space (e.g., Google Classroom, SeeSaw, Schoology).
MAISA is one of the partners working with DPTV on this project beginning with Phase 1 of vetting Pre K-Grade 3 Literacy content and developing the academic calendar for the content. The vetting team, over time, will consist of several educators and coaches around the state.
We have begun Phase 2 of this project which will allow us to move into production. Teachers and coaches around the state have applied to support this work and we are in the beginning process of selecting the first group of teachers.
Programming is taking place now! Check out the schedule at michiganlearningchannel.org

(PSAT/SAT/AP)
Dr. Rice announced that MDE is asking for a waiver for spring testing
Current P/SAT plan: F2F in spring, 8th and 11th are the accountability grades so schools need to especially focus on social distancing and scheduling for those grades
BUT no testing = one more year of absent data on student performance
Accountability results are likely to be in the portal by Aug/Sept, delayed about a month due to the flexibility in the testing window.
SAT session focusing on the question bank will be offered at the MI School Testing Conference in February
Spring AP Testing: Spring 2021 exams will be full length exams focused on the full course (F2F)
AP is sharing ways to help students and parents in this presentation

MI ELA Conference
All districts across the state of Michigan and beyond are invited to send teachers, teacher leaders, and administrators from all levels who are interested in diving deeply into work where we explore the significance of science and other related content instruction, and the impact that it can have on literacy. Sessions this year will be showcasing cross-disciplinary resources. Join us to engage in how this is transferable and implemented into the classroom.

Teaching Towards Justice
“MCTE’s diversity, inclusion, justice, and equity (dije) subcommittee has curated resources for Michigan PreK-16 English teachers and teacher educators to help them make choices for their classroom centered on justice as enacted through antiracism. We have selected videos, movies, articles, websites, books, book lists, podcasts, and curated resource lists. While we have tried to make the list expansive, it is not comprehensive to the many materials that can be found on the internet because it would be impossible to include all those here.
Our hope is that these resources will inspire teachers to engage in antiracism and justice, and develop their literacy in racial justice in their curricular, pedagogical, and assessment decisions.”
