Scout Service Day

It's that time of year again for the bi-annual scout service day at Nativity Lutheran Church. Please come out at 9am on Saturday, March 28th to help the church clean up there grounds and prepare for spring/summer. Those that have helped in the past know there is a lot that needs to be done around the church, so help it appreciated by the church.

Service is what scouts are known for and it becomes even more obvious when you get into Boy Scouts, becoming a requirement for advancement. Please come and help your scout learn the value of helping others.

Recognizing your leaders/volenteers

If you think there is a leader or volunteer from Pack 18, or if you know other leaders from other Packs and/or Troops, this is your chance to recognize them for their hard work. Every year the Fremont District has a banquet dinner where they recognize the year's Eagle Scouts, it's top leaders/volunteers, and just have a good meal. To nominate a leader/volunteer simply turn in a nomination form to the scout store by April 1st.

Camperall 2015

May 15-17. Camperall happens every 4 or 5 years and is when all Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Venture units come together for a big camp full of activities. This Camerall is at Train Mountain near Chiloquin, Oregon. As you can see from the picture below, Train Mountain is named for its 36 miles of small gage train tracks within the property. Cost is $15 or $8 if you come down for the day for boys and adults. Early registration deadline is April 16th. Get it to Chris Henningsen April 10th. Register after that an pay an addition $5 ($20). Make checks to "Crater Lake Council". Tshirts, hats, and sweatshirts available for extra cost.

Camp Cards fundraiser! Almost over....

Those that are selling cards need to wrap up their sales. Unsold cards and money raised needs to be turned in NO LATER THAN APRIL 14th (they need to be submitted by the 16th). Turn those in to your den leaders or to Curt Schrank. Den leaders will need to coordinate with Curt to him by Wednesday. My recommendation is to have submittal during the week of April 6th at the den meeting.


Remember, sell 75 cards and you get free access to Day Camp, plus the $2.50 per card put into your scout's account (held by our Pack Treasurer). If you sell 76 cards, you get Day Camp for free plus you earned enough in money to pay for Resident Camp outright. WOW!


Reimbursement will be made to those that have already put forward money for camp expenses. If you do not turn in your unsold cards, you are responsible for the cost of those cards. We don't want to go down that road unless we absolutely have to so PLEASE be organized for submittal by the deadline.

District Pinewood Derby

We had a great turn out from Pack 18 at the District Pinewood Derby races. We had a good time, but had only one scout from the Pack walk away with an award. That's ok..win some, lose some. We'll get them next year! Great job Owen

Recruiting

If you know any boys that are interested in the cub scout program, please have them call or email either Chris Henningsen or Russ White. The best way to get boys into the program is to have the boys introduce the program to other boys. Those boys that are in Kindergarten now are eligible to start Tigers in June. These boys can also sign up for any camp at early bird prices. They are not eligible for Pack camp scholarship (because they didn't participate in fundraising), but we want to get them involved and get them to camp!


Boys get a patch for their uniform if they get a boy to join.

Camps

Get your boy to camp....

Statistics show that boys that go to camp stay with the program longer. It's not only a lot of fun, but they have the opportunity to be boy an be around boys with similar interests.

Day Camp 2015 - Crater Lake Roundup

June 15-18th (Monday-Thursday), 2:15pm-8pm daily. Located in Redmond at the LDS Church @ 450 SW Rimrock. If is across from Redmond High School and the community pool, so scouts will have access to those facility, along with the LDC church gym. We have been promised that more information is soon to come, but expect a rock climbing wall, swimming, archery, bb gun, crafts, and more. This year the Webelos will have a special program just for them (we'll call it high adventure...the full list hasn't been released but they are talking Mountain biking).


Cost is $80 per scout and must be submitted to Chris Henningsen no later than March 31st. For submittal we need your medical forms (dated within 1 year of camp, scout and adults), the camp fee, and the registration form. We can't submit unless everything is there.


It is required that there is at least 1 adult for every 4 boys. Adults don't cost anything, unless they want a tshirt.

Get those forms, fee, and medical forms to Chris Henningsen ASAP. Most of the medical forms we have from the tubing event submitted in December, but in the event we don't have it we will be asking for it.

Carpooling should be coordinated between the independent parents of these scouts. A full list of participating parents and scouts will be provided once the pack is registered.

Cub Scout Resident Camp

Resident Camp is July 24-27, 2015. The following boys and adults are signed up to attend:

By the April Pack meeting, I need to have the remaining fees paid, USDA forms, and T-Shirt sizes (YS, YM, YL, YXL, AS, AM, AL, AXL). Medical forms (parts A, B and C) need to be submitted a month before camp. Please don't wait until the last minute to do your medical forms because it requires a medical visit.


Please make checks payable to "Pack 18". If you didn't use your $40 Pack scholarship yet, don't forget to make the check for $40 less than the total amount.

The Pack needs trained leadership....

Yes... to do fun things we need trained adults. We only have 1 adult in the Pack that is trained. Training provides the following: 1) a better, more organized den and pack meeting, 2) an understanding of BSA's expectations for putting on a good meeting, 3) a network of people outside the Pack where you can ask question. As adult we are in the program to provide a good experience for the boys. Why do things half way?


To be a trained leader, you should 1) take leader specific training (Den Leader, Cub Master, Committee Member, etc.) and 2) be current in Youth Protection Training (every 2 years). Other trainings include BALOO (Basic Adult Leadership Outdoor Orientation) training, weather hazards training, and safe swim defense, and others. These other trainings are required for outdoor organized events for your boys to get a BSA permit. Without a BSA outing permit, you are not eligible for BSA liability coverage for that outing. Training can be done online at myscouting.org, or preferably at one of the bi-annual meetings (you learn so much more and get face time with others in your position).


See a listing below of trainings coming up. It is a huge black mark on the Pack's District records and it only helps our kids.

It's the Busy time of year....

Yes, it's that time of the year where everything happens at once. We have scouts, school events, baseball, basketball and the list goes on... What we ask is that when you know your boys schedule to share it with your den leader. They will try to reorganize the meeting schedule (if they can make it happen with their personal schedules) to ensure we get the max participation possible. With the weather getting nice and the days getting longer, this is when scouts can get fun and really hold their attention in the program, so it becomes important to get them to the meetings.

Bend Elks Baseball Game

It was just announced that the annual BSA Bend Elks game and campout is on June 27th. Times and costs have not been announced yet. For those that haven't doe this before, every scout comes in uniform to the game. Afterward they have the option of camping out in the outfield and watching a movie. Mark your calendar.

Nativity Lutheran is having their spring cleanup. Come support our charter organization by helping them clean the grounds and care for the facilities. More importantly, providing service to the community is one of the fundamentals of scouting. Help reinforce that value with your boy(s).

Outdoor Leadership Training

Currently, our Pack has only one trained member for Outdoor Leadership and/or BALOO...and he is just took this den camping. How about your den? Pack Meeting - Cake Bake

In the past we have had a cake bake auction for fundraising. This year we did so well, we aren't selling off the cakes. Instead we are doing a cake walk and then EATING them. The catch is this...the scout must make the cake (with adult help of course). Just have fun and make it a learning experience.
