Tonya Hegamin
The Cave Canem alum and Ezra Jack Keats award winner moves fluidly through genres -- from poetry to children's literature to historical novels. She recently completed a slave-era young adult novel, "Willow," to be published next year. These days she might be working on a graphic novel, a performance piece, a ghost story, as well as a few Haiku poems.
Michael Gonzales
His Twitter name is @GonzoMike. His slogan: Writing Wrongs Without A Cape. And the brother slays bad guys with his mighty pen across a wide swath of Gotham via his essays and music writing for New York, Uptown, The Village Voice, HYCIDE, NY Press, Wax Poetics, Vibe, Spin, XXL, Essence, Entertainment Weekly and Blackadelic Pop, to name a few.
Samantha Thornhill
A globe-trotting author and poet, she performs her work on international stages from Budapest to Brooklyn. Here's how Kwame Dawes, director of the Calabash Literary Festival, describes her work: "What Samantha does with language, with idiom, with sound, with metaphor and with form strikes me as groundbreaking -- opening a new space in our literature."
