NO SCHOOL ON MONDAY

Dear Richland Families,

What a wonderful start to the 2023-2024 school year! Every Sunday afternoon you will receive an edition of the Richland Reflections with highlights from our week and everything you need to know about the days and weeks ahead. The Richland community is like no other, and we value our partnership with our families.

In this first newsletter of the school year, you'll see highlights from our first week, read about the Leader in Me and how we recognize students demonstrating the 7 habits, get a glimpse of fall events organized by our amazing PTO, and preview some new spirit wear from Richland's store. Keep reading for much more information.

This is my eighth year as the proud principal of Richland. We believe in educating the whole child - academically, socially, emotionally, and behaviorally. We invite you to see a window into your child's days when you visit Richland for Back to School Night on September 19. Details are in this newsletter.

This school year is going to be the best year yet! As always, we thank you for your support.

With gratitude,

Dr. Nicole Zuerblis

Richland Principal

WHAT IS LEADER IN ME?

Leader in Me is a philosophy used at our school to promote leadership qualities in our students! Students learn about and practice our 7 habits daily. Those habits are as follows:

  1. Be proactive

  2. Begin with the end in mind

  3. Put first things first

  4. Think win-win

  5. Seek first to understand, then to be understood

  6. Synergize

  7. Sharpen the Saw

What will my child gain from Leader in Me?

Each day at Richland, students are encouraged to show the 7 habits. Students receive lessons focused on showing these habits in all areas of our school. Lessons include teaching students what these ideas look like in each area and practicing what those behaviors look like. Students will continue to receive these types of lessons throughout the year.

What is the Leaderboard?

Each day, adults in the school building have tickets to give to any student they see exhibiting one of the 7 habits. Once a student receives a Leader Ticket, he or she will go to the office to sign our school Leader Book, pick a number at random for the placement of their ticket on the Leaderboard, and will bring home a postcard to show you so that you may share in their good news! Once the student has a ticket on the board, he or she is eligible to receive the "mystery motivator". When ten tickets in a row are up on the board, those students will spin a wheel to receive a mystery motivator prize. Examples of motivators are extra recess, lunch with Dr. Zuerblis, and more.

How can I help from home?

We encourage you to discuss the program with your child at home. The characteristics of the 7 habits encourage responsibility and ownership of one's actions, as well as other leadership qualities. Ask your child to use the ideas shared at school when at home and in the neighborhood, and routinely check in with your child on how he or she is demonstrating these characteristics at school.
