You are very welcome to the Intensive English as a Second Language (ESL) Program at the Middlebury Institute!

September 5 - November 17: 10 Amazing Weeks of English!

Our ESL program is for students from low to high levels of English who want to improve their language skills for conversation, business, or future academic study.


ESL students take classes in oral communication, reading & writing, integrated skills, American culture, and TOEFL Preparation.


You do not need a TOEFL score to apply to this program.


If you plan to attend an American university or college, we offer specialized courses suited to the needs of our more advanced students. English for academic purposes courses prepare international students for the American university classroom.

Middlebury Institute's ESL Program Succeed in Learning English

The program tuition is $4,175.


At this time we do not offer scholarships for our ESL students.


Students attend class 21 hours per week. Generally, students need about US $9,455 for the fall to cover tuition, housing, health insurance and living expenses.

The Middlebury Institute does not offer on-campus housing. We suggest that you begin your housing search before you arrive. Most of our students live with a homestay family or in an apartment close to campus. To learn more about homestay offerings, you check out some companies here: ISP Homestays, GP Homestay, and Viva Homestay.


If you would prefer to rent a room or an apartment off-campus, the Middlebury Institute Student Services office can help you find information about rooms and apartments for rent in the area.

All students who are not US citizens must have a valid immigration status for study in the United States. Most students will require an F-1 non-immigrant visa in order to study at the Middlebury Institute.


Please note: we cannot accept students with a B-1 or B-2 (tourist) class visa.


Applicants will begin the visa application process with our Office of International Student Services after they are fully accepted into the program.
